Amateur Electronic Supply (AES) has announced that it is ceasing operations
as of the end of July, 2016. The Milwaukee-based retailer has four
locations around the country, including Milwaukee; Cleveland (Wickliffe),
Ohio; Las Vegas, Nevada and Orlando, Florida. It has long been the nation's
second-largest ham radio dealer, after Ham Radio Outlet. No reason was
given for the decision to close the business.

Ham Radio Equals Communications Preparedness:

Members of the Hill Country Amateur Radio Club participated in a national
public "Amateur Radio Field Day" exercise on June 25-26 at Our Lady of the
Hills High School sports pavilion on Peterson Farm Road. The exercise as a
national event lasted 24 hours, but also offered a public open house 2-5
p.m. on Saturday, where free food and door prizes were offered along with
the chance to speak over the air with other ham radio stations around the
country, and see demonstrations of off-the-grid emergency communications.
Since 1933, ham radio operators across North America have established
temporary ham radio stations in public locations during Field Day to
showcase the science and skill of amateur radio. For more than 100 years,
amateur radio -- sometimes called "ham radio" -- has allowed people from
all walks of life to experiment with electronics and communications
techniques, as well as provide a free public service to their communities
during a disaster, all without needing a cell phone or the internet. Field
Day demonstrates ham radio's ability to work reliably under any conditions
from almost any location, and create an independent communications network.
