Ham Radio: A Last Resort When Phone Lines Fail:

Posted: 20 Sep 2016 05:08 PM PDT
http://www.eham.net/articles/37581

If disaster strikes, there is a form of communication that can still get
through: a ham radio. When 9/11 hit New York City in 2001, for instance,
ham radio operators provided a connection to the outside world. One of
those people was amateur radio enthusiast Bob Kyvig, formerly of White Bear
Lake, who now lives in Centerville. "The only communication out there on
9/11 was amateur radio," Kyvig recalled. "The telephone lines were jammed
and no one was going in or out." On the days following that horrific
attack, Kyvig assumed the role of messenger, relaying messages from
Manhattan to loved ones in the area by calling or knocking on their door.
His house calls would go like this: "I am Bob; I am a ham operator. I just
communicated with your loved one; they are fine and doing well and they
will talk to you soon."

4O3A Signature Division of Sky Sat Releases Firmware App for Antenna Genius

Posted: 20 Sep 2016 05:07 PM PDT
http://www.eham.net/articles/37580

Sky Sat Communications founder and CEO Ranko Boca (amateur radio callsign
4O3A) today announced the official release of the Antenna Genius v3
firmware and Windows app, a free upgrade available for download starting
today. V3 adds three, much-requested new features. Antenna Genius brings
the antenna switch (also known as a coax switch) into the 21st Century
routing up to thirty-two antennas to one or two transceivers with
best-in-class port-to-port isolation (75 dB worst case), high power
handling (3 kW at high duty cycle), plus the capability to be transceiver
band-switched via legacy BCD or 'pin to port' lines as well as the 100 Mbps
TCP/IP port. AG has support for the FlexRadio SmartSDR API - SmartSDR will
directly control AG over LAN (and Antenna Genius is available in the
FlexRadio online store). The 4O3A Genius product line - which includes
Antenna Genius, Rotator Genius, and Interface Genius - is distinguished by
its prioritization of TCP/IP over LAN for communication, both between 4O3A
Genius line devices and with third party radio communications equipment and
software. 4O3A Genius products (4O3A.com) were designed as network devices
from the beginning, not as a 'bolted on' feature. Ethernet delivers faster
data orders of magnitude faster than USB (and serial) protocols which means
vastly more control capability and the ubiquitous nature of TCP/IP
enables 'access anywhere, anytime from almost anything.'

FCC Updates Notice on Amateur Radio Operation in CEPT Countries:

The FCC has updated its Public Notice on Amateur Radio operation in
European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations
(CEPT) countries that have adopted certain recommendations regarding
the US. The updated notice, in English, German, and French, includes
some additional countries where operation is permitted. Licensees
operating in CEPT countries must have a copy of the Public Notice,
proof of US citizenship, and evidence of an FCC Amateur Radio
license grant. These must be shown to "proper authorities" upon
request.

Interesting QSO?

I suggest the establishment of several nets on D-Star each focused on a
topic of interest such as entrepreneurship, farming, gardening, physics,
photography, biotech, astronomy, ancient Greek history, and others to be
suggested during our first on-the-air meeting. These are not intended to
be nets of experts, but an opportunity to share interests: from beginner to
experienced. If you think this is an attractive idea, please send me an
empty email with the subject as follows: "net idea is good".
