Sept. 20 council meeting naming October as FLARC 60th anniversary
month. "The Borough of Fair Lawn is proud of the FLARC," said Mayor John

Ham Radio Operators Connect World:

Posted: 30 Sep 2016 01:47 AM PDT
http://www.eham.net/articles/37654

The San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site was used as a special event
location for an amateur radio station on Sept. 24-25. W5SFA Radio Club
members operated ham radios to commemorate the 193rd anniversary of the
founding of Austin's Colony in Texas in 1823. Over the weekend, residents
frequented the site off and on and the radio club was even visited by a
group of school children from Spring Branch Independent School
District. "Austin County is probably not the most popular county for ham
radio," said Roger Klein, Stephen F. Austin Radio Club president. Although
that may be true, Klein said many ham radio operators want to connect with
Texas, generally during the Texas QSO party, which lends the opportunity
for Texas amateur radio operators and amateur radio operators around the
world to make contact. According to the club's website, each year, at the
end of September, the party aims to connect all 254 Texas counties and its
looked at as one of the briefest points through the year where that might
actually be possible.

William, Kate Send Tweet -- via Morse Code:

Posted: 30 Sep 2016 01:47 AM PDT
http://www.eham.net/articles/37653

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge brought old technology up to date when
they used a Morse code telegraph machine to send their first joint tweet.
William and Kate's message was transmitted to the world during a visit to a
Canadian museum telling the story of the Yukon - famed as the home of the
Klondike gold rush. Radio operator Doug Bell tapped out the Cambridges'
tweet when their tour of the visitor attraction in Whitehorse - known as
the Wilderness City - brought them to the settlement's old telegraph
office, now a preserved exhibit. The royal couple both held the lever down
to send the tweet, posted under the Twitter account Telegraph to Tweet,
which said: "The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, September 2016, Whitehorse
Yukon."

Scientists are baffled by nearly two dozen radio sources from deep space
that could potentially be coming from extraterrestrial life. Italian
scientists have spent several months observing the signals and cannot
pinpoint their source, according to The Daily Caller. The absence of light
in the optical or ultraviolet spectrums rules out stars as the source.

Posted: 29 Sep 2016 01:34 PM PDT
http://www.eham.net/articles/37644

ARRL is serving as a catalyst in a nascent campaign -- "Ivy + Amateur
Radio" -- to boost college and university Amateur Radio club interest,
membership, and activity. The initiative sprang from a conversation
earlier this year between ARRL CEO Tom Gallagher, NY2RF, and retired
Yale University staffer Dr Martin Ewing, AA6E, about how to get
colleges and universities to revitalize their ham clubs. Ewing relayed
the message to the president of the Yale University Amateur Radio Club
(W1YU), who, in turn, contacted the president of the Harvard University
Amateur Radio Club (W1AF).

Amateur Radio Volunteers Go on Alert During Major Puerto Rico Power Outage:

Posted: 29 Sep 2016 01:33 PM PDT
http://www.eham.net/articles/37643

Amateur Radio volunteers went on alert following an afternoon explosion
on September 21 at a power station in Salinas that left some 1.5
million residents of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico without power.
ARRL Public Information Coordinator Angel Santana, WP3GW, said that as
the evening wore on, the most sought-after items were ice and potable
water -- which depend on electricity to power the pumps that deliver
it. The outage also resulted in traffic jams due to non-functioning
signal lights. The governor of Puerto Rico declared a State of
Emergency.

consistently as they should have been. In order to make sure club
results are accurate and fair to all, the ARRL Contest Branch is

Retired Librarian Who Was Maine's First Woman Radio Amateur Turns 108:

http://www.eham.net/articles/37633

Mary Cousins, ex-W1GSC, who was the first woman in Maine to obtain an
Amateur Radio license, celebrated her 108th birthday on September 20.
Now a resident of a care facility in the coastal fishing village of
Deer Isle, Cousins was treated to a party complete with a
cake decorated with images of local newspaper articles from 1908,
the year she was born. The confection also bore an image of her 1933
"Amateur First" radio license, issued to Mary Sibyl Wallace -- her
maiden name -- by the old Federal Radio Commission, when Cousins was
24. The FCC came into being the following year. Cousins' old call sign
has since been reissued at least once. Cousins said she operated Morse,
although she does not remember the code anymore, and used to relay
weather information using that mode.
