Copperas Cove: Local Ham Radio Operators Practice for Emergencies:

The Copperas Cove Repeater Association teamed up with city emergency
management to brush up on their communication skills at the National
Amateur Radio Winter Field Day Saturday afternoon. At a Copperas Cove fire
station, residents are learned what it's like to communicate through ham
radio over a 24 hour period. "It's an opportunity for them to come into our
facility, set up their equipment and pretend that we have a disaster where
we need their communication support," Emergency Management Coordinator,
Deputy Chief Gary Young said. Their goal is to communicate with as many
contacts as possible. But Bruce Coons doesn't need a semi-annual event to
keep his skills fresh.

The Maui Amateur Radio Club recently honored Mel Fukunaga, KH6Y, for his
long-term dedication to amateur radio licensing on Maui. The Federal
Communications Commission issues amateur (ham) radio licenses, however
since 1982 the FCC has authorized private organizations to administer the
exams. Since 1982, Fukunaga has been in charge of the Volunteer Examiners
on Maui and on Dec. 2 he administered his 100th exam session. Fukunaga and
the club give exams three times a year: April, August and December. For
more information about getting an amateur radio license, visit
www.kh6rs.org. Fukunaga was also for many years the amateur radio emergency
communications lead on Maui until he retired from that position at the
start of 2017. He organized and trained the ham volunteers, who are
prepared to help with emergency communications in the event of a failure of
other links such as landlines, cellphones and the internet.

New images taken with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array
(ALMA) in Chile have revealed otherwise invisible details of our Sun,
including a new view of the dark, contorted center of a sunspot that is
nearly twice the diameter of the Earth. The images are the first ever made
of the Sun with a facility where ESO is a partner. The results are an
important expansion of the range of observations that can be used to probe
the physics of our nearest star.

Digital Radios Mulled for City Police's Use:

CEBU City Councilor David Tumulak wants Mayor Tomas OsmeƱa to authorize the
purchase of ultra high-frequency digital handheld radios and radio
repeaters for the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO). This came after the
Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency 7 found that drug suspects Janice and
Manuel Godinez tapped into the police's signal prior to their arrest in
Barangay Buaya, Lapu-Lapu City last Friday night. Tumulak, who is deputy
mayor for police matters, said it is time the CCPO shift to digital gadgets
to maximize its efforts in the war against illegal drugs. "Analog radios
are easy to tap, but the digitals are impenetrable. It can't even be
jammed. Also, we'll only distribute it to responsible persons to ensure
security," he said. He explained that most amateur radio groups and even
the Lapu-Lapu City Police Office are still using analog radios, which make
them vulnerable to signal tapping.
