/////////////////////////////////////////// When All Else Fails: LLH Hosts Amateur Radio Enthusiasts: Posted: 03 Feb 2017 04:01 PM PST http://www.eham.net/articles/38571 LINVILLE -- Imagine for a moment that a natural disaster has struck in Avery County. Electricity is out, communications towers are down or jammed and cell phones are as useful as a paperweight. When such catastrophe strikes, communication becomes a precious commodity. In situations such as these, amateur (ham) radio operators spring into action. Utilizing homemade antennae, generators and portable radio transceivers, ham radio operators can have emergency communications up and running, in any location, in a very short amount of time. When all other means of communication fail, ham radio serves as the most reliable backup network in the United States. /////////////////////////////////////////// A Look Back: I Heard It on the Radio: Posted: 03 Feb 2017 04:01 PM PST http://www.eham.net/articles/38570 Conway may have had one of the first radio stations in the state when the U.S. Department of Commerce issued a license to Conway Radio Laboratories on October 2, 1923. KFKW operated at 150 watts on Tuesday and Friday evenings if Ben Woodruff, the owner, was around. The U.S. government began licensing radio stations in late 1912 and from the beginning gave the stations call letters starting with a K or a W. Stations in the west were given a K while all stations in the east were given a W. The original dividing line ran north along the Texas-New Mexico state line but in January, 1923, this line was moved to east to follow the Mississippi River. That is why Conway's new radio station was given call letters that started with a K. In addition to operating KFKQ, Conway Radio Laboratories had the town's first radio store in the Conway Theater building. Here one could buy the necessary parts for assembling a radio set. In the 1920s, Conway had its share of radio "hams" or amateur radio builders and operators. /////////////////////////////////////////// Foundations of Amateur Radio -- #87: Posted: 03 Feb 2017 12:45 PM PST http://www.eham.net/articles/38566 MARS is our next door planet or it relates to Pumping up the Volume, but what does it have to do with Amateur Radio? |
