EMF Exposure Update

On Saturday 5th December we welcomed Richard Carrington G0RRZ our RSGB rep.
to our Net. He had offered to update us and answer questions on the new EMF
Exposure requirements. These will become part of our license requirements
very soon. These requirements are not aimed specifically at amateurs, UK or
European users but internationally for all radio users of any type of radio
including commercial and cellular systems. The USA have already implemented
their interpretation.

OFCOM have made proposals about UK requirements and RSGB have replied with
some questions on the implications for amateurs. See
https://rsgb.org/main/technical/emc/emf-exposure/. To learn more, see the
ICNIRP and OFCOM links.

Antennas will need to have calculations made to demonstrate their safety to
the public. This can be based on actual measurements or just on
calculations. Measurements alone only tell part of the story as the amount
of time and mode operated is also considered. There are several
spreadsheets available, some easier than others and RSGB may in future
provide one specifically for us but at the moment the OFCOM one could be
used for initial records.
https://www.ofcom.org.uk/__data/asse...or-v0.1.1.xlsx
(for those without access to Excel a free option is Libre Office).

A calculation will need to be made at some point and kept for every antenna
and band which can be used by the station. At the moment we understand it
only applies above 10w. Most of our members who have tried it so far have
found no cause for concern.

Richard took away a list of questions, most of which have now been found in
the FAQ
https://www.ofcom.org.uk/__data/asse...5/emf-faqs.pdf

We thank Richard for joining us and look forward to further updates.
