https://radioinsight.com/headlines/2...tations-trust/

iHeartMedia is nearing the end of clearing out its Aloha Stations Trust for
divestitures necessitated from its 2007 privatization.

iHeart is donating its two Dayton OH market FMs Country B94.5 WYDB

Association. The deal is structured with iHeartMedia donating the equipment
associated with both stations transmitters while Delmarva will pay
iHeartMedia $200,000 to reimburse for costs incurred for the maintenance of
the trust and divestiture of the stations. Delmarva will assume the
obligations for the WYDBs tower lease and enter into a sublease for WRZX.

Grant Stinchfield Joins KRLA/KTIE As Morning Co-Host

Posted: 17 May 2021 11:07 AM PDT
https://radioinsight.com/headlines/2...rning-co-host/

Salem Media Conservative Talkers 870 The Answer KRLA Glendale/Los Angeles
and 590 The Answer KTIE San Bernardino have announced the addition of Grant
Stinchfield as morning co-host.

Stinchfield will join Jennifer Horn for The Morning Answer starting
Tuesday, May 18. Stinchfield will continue to anchor for Newsmax TV in
addition to his new role for Salem. He previously hosted evenings at
Cumulus Medias 570 KLIF Dallas, was an investigative reporter for NBC owned
television stations in Dallas and Hartford, and a host for NRA TV.

Stinchfield fills the co-host slot that had been held by Brian Whitman
until last December.

Salem Media Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: SALM) announced today that after an
extensive and exhilarating months-long search for a new co-host to team
with Jennifer Horn on The Morning Answer for Talkers AM 870 in Los Angeles
and AM 590 in Riverside and San Bernardino, broadcast veteran Grant
Stinchfield joins The Morning Answer on Tuesday, May 18th.

Grant Stinchfield will continue to host his daily television program
Stinchfield on Newsmax. The Morning Answer with Jennifer Horn and Grant
Stinchfield is heard weekday mornings 6-9am on KRLA-AM and KTIE-AM.

“Good things come to those that wait,” according to Chuck Tyler, Director
of Programming for KRLA and KTIE. “We put Jennifer Horn through the ringer,
as we tried out numerous co-hosts for this plumb assignment, having a
number of world-class talk-radio candidates. It took us five months. The
good news is Jennifer survived, and we found an amazing new partner for
her!”

VP/General Manager Terry Fahy remarked, “Grant Stinchfield is an ideal fit
for The Morning Answer here in Southern California. The chemistry is
already spectacular. We look forward to covering the news, commenting on
the news…and making news from our home base in Los Angeles.”

“Grant is a true gem. He is smart, funny and knows his stuff. His
chemistry with Jennifer makes the morning show sizzle. We are delighted to
add him to the team,” added Senior Vice President Phil Boyce.

According to The Morning Answer Co-Host Jennifer Horn, “The Morning Answer
has reached new ratings highs over the last few months and I cannot wait to
grow the show with Grant. We clicked on day one and have great plans for
making The Morning Answer, bigger, better and brighter than ever!”

Grant added, “It is an honor to be chosen to be an important voice for
millions of Californians who cherish liberty and freedom in a state that is
quickly being controlled by big bureaucracy and government. I can’t think
of a more important area of the country that needs common sense straight
talk than Southern California. My goal is to simply strengthen the tireless
fight AM 870 and AM 590 is already waging war against the enemies of
freedom, capitalism and democracy.”

Levitating Rises to the Top Again

Posted: 17 May 2021 09:15 AM PDT
https://radioinsight.com/ross/208066...the-top-again/

There are just so many temptations for a journalist when a song called
“Levitating” rebounds at radio. “Levitating floats on?” “Levitating is
magic?” “PDs say it’s now a hit/they’re a tad bit late/Dua Lipa and Da
Baby/had to levitate?”

“Levitating” peaked at No. 4 on Jan. 18 according to BDSradio and began
losing spins in the week of February 8. If it was classified as a current,
which is how many CHR stations are now playing it, it would be the No. 5
song in the country. (Ironically, the song it would push from No. 10 to 11
would be Dua Lipa’s “We’re Good.”)

Stations have not done numbered playlists for years. When they did, a
station might on a rare occasion “re-add” a song it had dropped, usually at
a high chart number. Songs are rarely truly dropped now, and the lines
between current, recurrent, and “off” are fungible. But if this were an
old-style playlist, Dua Lipa’s “Levitating” would be a re-add at No. 4 or 5
(or higher) for those stations now playing it in power.

In early February, the large-market stations powering “Levitating” were
mostly those owned by Cumulus, Entercom (now Audacy), or smaller owners.
The song’s biggest iHeart-owned large-market supporter was WXKS (Kiss 108)
Boston. Now “Levitating” is in power in every top 10 market except one.
Many of the stations powering “Levitating” were playing it somewhere
between 60-75x in its peak week, although there are a few stations like
KDWB Minneapolis (18x) or WFLC (Hits 97.3) Miami (54x) where it is a
sharper reversal.

At a station like KMVQ (Now 99.7) San Francisco that was “power then, power
now” on “Levitating,” the song has received more than 3,200 spins over the
last year. (Most other stations began playing it in late September/early
October.) WWWQ (Q99.7) Atlanta and Kiss 108 are both around 2,900 spins,
according to BDSradio.

As recently as three weeks ago, I wrote that there was a chance of Song of
Summer 2021 being an actual summer song, rather than a winter or spring
holdover. There didn’t seem like an obvious choice among the current hits
to become this year’s lingering “Sucker” or “Blinding Lights,” in part
because the tenacity of “Blinding Lights” (as well as Dua Lipa’s previous
hits “Don’t Start Now” and “Break My Heart”) meant that no uptempo winter
monster had really emerged. That is no longer true.*

By several accounts, the issue for those stations not powering “Levitating”
in January/February was familiarity. Top 40 radio was at its most
challenged at the time — a format of three-share stations impacted not just
by COVID-era listening habits, but also by December’s disruption of
listening by Christmas music on Adult Contemporary radio. It would have
been hard for most songs to kick in. “Levitating” was also in the extensive
shadows of “Don’t Start Now” and “Break My Heart” for some stations.

Should stations have just powered “Levitating” anyway in January,
regardless of what callout showed? I understand if that would have felt
like grade inflation for a song just because it had tempo and was a great
radio record. What happens in the world beyond callout is another issue. A
medium-market station without callout trying to decide what to do in
February could have followed the lead of Kiss 108 (100x that week) or
Kiss-FM (WAKS) Cleveland (40x). What most choose to do is just follow the
chart, where losing spins in the aggregate turns out to be more important
than any individual story.

I would thus avoid declaring that the system worked on “Levitating” and
listeners embraced it only when they were ready. There might have been
nothing Top 40 could do in its weakened state in January, but the ratings
show that the format doesn’t work with 14 viable currents that take eight
months to break either. “Levitating” will play all summer, and I’ll be
happy to hear it because it didn’t reach saturation in January. But Top 40
still needs another 20 songs like it and needs to do the work to develop
them.

When Dua Lipa won the “Best Pop Album” Grammy, her “thank you” list
included the Warner Records promotion team. “Don’t Start Now,” “Break My
Heart,” and now “Levitating” have helped radio continue to prove its value
in creating real hits that help drive streaming metrics, rather than just
scrambling to catch up with them. It’s also evidence that the audience that
likes “Astronaut in the Ocean” or “Rapstar” isn’t uninterested in an
uptempo, major-chord hit record when one comes along. Lipa’s speech also
acknowledged that she had once been afraid of not being taken seriously
unless her music was sober before deciding “happiness is something we all
deserve.”

Interestingly, you can find support for tempo in the streaming world now,
too. The top two songs on Spotify’s Today’s Top Hits playlist are
“Levitating” and Doja Cat’s “Kiss Me More.” “Levitating” maintained a
strong presence on Today’s Top Hits, even as radio backed off. In fact,
sometimes the uptempo pop balance records that seem like mid-charters for
major-market programmers endure longer on TTH. Miley Cyrus & Lipa’s
“Prisoner” stayed there long after radio was done. Ava Max’s “My Head and
My Heart” is there now. *

Just as the notion of what constitutes a TikTok record has expanded to
include almost everything over the last year, the traditional pattern of
active and passive records is being disrupted as well. A CHR PD may regard
Imagine Dragons’ “Follow You” as an Adult CHR record, but it’s on Today’s
Top Hits as well. (So, for that matter, is Pink’s duet with her daughter,
“Cover Me in Sunshine,” a No. 2 song in Australia that wasn’t worked to
radio here.)

I’ve written in the past that Top 40 radio has somehow reached a backwards
place where programmers expect balance records to stream but active records
to test. “Levitating” followed two massive hits, and came from a hip
artist, meaning it initially hit the wall at No. 4. Other tempo songs start
to struggle well before reaching the top 10. Marshmello & Halsey’s “Be
Kind” peaked at No. 14. A year later, “Be Kind” is only on a few CHRs but
one of them is WKTU New York, where it did well enough that even AC sister
WLTW (Lite FM) tried the song for a few weeks, despite it never having been
a CHR power at the time.*

How songs develop has become complex, but in a way that should be helpful
to a song like “Levitating” that can have a streaming or a callout story.
It’s a good thing when uptempo songs that sound great on the radio can do
that. Until we have more great records than we can play again, programmers
should not be finicky because a song does not have both consumption and
callout. Unlike “Blinding Lights,” I can say that I’m not tired of it yet,
in part because it didn’t reach airplay saturation.

Townsquare Goes La Grande In Killeen

Posted: 17 May 2021 04:30 AM PDT
https://radioinsight.com/headlines/2...de-in-killeen/

Townsquare Media has flipped Classic Rock K-Rock 101.7 KLTD Temple/Killeen
TX to Regional Mexican La Grande 101.7.

The move gives the Killeen/Temple market its only Spanish language station
as the audience was previously served by stations in the adjacent Austin
and Waco markets. The flip was first indicated in our 4/22 Domain Insight.

KLTD had flipped from Classic Hits to Classic Rock in June 2017 as part of
a group deal to bring the regionally syndicated Walton Johnson morning
show back to the market. Producer Ken Webster Jr. rose to co-host alongside
Steve Johnson following the 2019 death of John Walton. The remainder of the
station consisted of out of market voicetrackers.

KLTD had a 2.2 share in the Fall 2020 Nielsen Audio ratings, placing it
well behind iHeartMedia Rock 107.3 The Fox KLFXs 4.1 share.

Radio Now Houston Gives Way To Praise

Posted: 17 May 2021 03:31 AM PDT
https://radioinsight.com/headlines/2...way-to-praise/

Radio One flipped CHR Radio Now 92.1 KROI Seabrook/Houston TX to Gospel
Praise 92.1 this morning.

The move brings the Praise brand back to the 92.1 signal as it was
previously heard there from 2006 to 2011. Since then it has continued to be
heard on 102.1 KMJQ-HD2. KROI will carry Radio Ones suite of syndicated
daily programming including Get Up Mornings with Erica Campbell, Willie
Moore Jr. in afternoons, and The Nightly Spirit with Darlene McCoy.

The CHR Radio Now brand had aired on KROI since January 2017 when it
launched to fill the second CHR slot in the market role created by CBS
Radios flip of Hot 95.7 KKHH to Adult Hits 95.7 The Spot. Due to its
rimshot signal, it never generated any momentum against Cumulus Medias
104.1 KRBE with Radio Now rising from a 0.5 to 0.8 share in the March 2021
Nielsen Audio ratings placing it well behind KRBEs 3.5.

Exiting the station with the flip are midday host On Air Laura Dickerson
and evening host Jessica Jeanz. Dickerson joined KROI in June 2017 from
producing mornings at Hot 97.5/103.9 KMVA/KZON Phoenix. Jeanz also hosts
late nights at Hip Hop 97.9 The Box KBXX. She previously worked at KROI
during its former Classic Hip Hop Boom 92 iteration and has also worked in
mornings at Hot AC Mix 105.1 KKRG Albuquerque and spent eleven years at
98.5 The Beat KBBT San Antonio. KROI aired Yea! Networks Kidd Kraddick
Morning Show and Tino Cochino Radio in afternoons.

Radio One Houston is pleased to announce the re-launch of Houston’s
Inspiration Station, KROI Praise 92.1 / KMJQ Praise 102.1 HD2. In the late
2000’s and early 2010’s Praise inspired Houstonians through difficult times
on the 92.1 radio frequency. Houston’s Inspiration Station is now back on
the 92.1 dial with a new and improved signal offering full market coverage
in HD broadcasting at 40,000 watts and simulcasting on Praise 102.1 HD2.
With inspirational songs and motivational content, Praise is providing a
new all-star lineup of gospel greats to Houston.

Houston can now GET UP and enjoy Mornings with Erica Campbell,
award-winning gospel music singer and reality TV star. Erica Campbell
creates a high-energy experience for listeners to start every day in FAITH,
with LOVE and having JOY. Get Up! Mornings with Erica Campbell can be heard
from 5AM-9AM weekdays.

Keep the faith while working from home with TJ Jackson, an award-winning
Manager, On-Air Personality, Talk Show Host, Public Speaker, Voice Over
Artist, and community leader. Whether she’s hosting a talk show or music
program, voicing commercials, planning or hosting events, TJ gets up in the
morning to make life better for someone else. Listen to TJ in the mid-day
from 9AM – 2PM weekdays.

“It’s a privilege to re-launch such an uplifting and positive station,
especially during these times of uncertainty where people are looking for
outlets of love and hope to keep them inspired,” says Radio One Houston’s
Vice President and General Manager, Pam McKay.

Pump up your afternoon with “The Willie Moore Jr. Show.” As a
world-renowned influencer, Willie is a licensed minister and Comedic
Speaker where many call him “Young America’s Pastor”. Gifted to tell
stories, jokes, and share bible-based principles he’s irrationally
passionate to #KeepIt100 and tell the #Flat-out truth. Tune into The Willie
Moore Jr. Show 2PM-6PM weekdays.

Terri Thomas, Operations Manager of Radio One Houston says, “It’s in times
like these where people want to escape from today’s challenging realities
and listen to music that inspires and makes them feel good.”

Enjoy your evenings with Darlene McCoy. The song “I’m Every Woman” would be
the ideal preamble! She bears a plethora of titles in an attempt to define
her: Mother, National Recording Artist, Radio Personality, Actress, Author,
Songwriter, Mentor, Entrepreneur, Comedian, and Speaker. It is evident that
we have not witnessed all that God has placed behind this bright, shining
star of a woman. Darlene McCoy can be heard 6PM-10PM weekdays.

The Praise continues every weekend on Saturday with the Spirit Top 15
countdown and shows featuring recording artist Ronnette Rollins, actress
Veda Howard, award winners D. Stone and Willie Moore Jr. Plus a Sunday
lineup featuring motivational speaker Krystal Lee, evangelist Cheryl
Jackson and singer/songwriter Jermaine Dolly.
