This Week's News

IRTS Radio News Bulletin Sunday June 13th 2021.

HAREC Examination

The following statement was issued by the IRTS Examination Board on
Saturday June 12th. Having had further discussions with ComReg during
the week and due to the changes that have taken place in public health
guidelines, it has now become apparent that exams will take place as
soon as possible after the 5th of July. All candidates will be
contacted and given dates and venues of their exams.

IRTS 40 Metre News

Propagation conditions on Sunday mornings around 11 o'clock do not
currently favour inter-EI communications and this is a problem for the
IRTS news broadcast on 7.123MHz at 1100 local time. Joe Cosgrave EI5EG
retired as the 40 metre news broadcaster some weeks ago and since then
the role has been filled by Owen O'Reilly EI4GGB located in Mullingar.
Owen will not be available every Sunday and volunteer news readers are
required to join a rota to keep the service on the air. Anyone
interested should contact Declan Horan EI9FVB by email at horandx /at/
gmail.com or by telephone on 086-3336386. Declan's phone number is also
used to accept reports on both the 80 and 40 metre news broadcasts from
shortwave listeners.

IRTS Committee Meeting June 19th

The next meeting of the IRTS committee will be held on the Zoom
platform on Saturday next June 19th at 1100. Affiliated clubs and
societies with at least five IRTS members amongst their membership are
reminded that they may nominate one of their members to attend IRTS
committee meetings. The name of the elected club representative should
be advised to the IRTS secretary. Club representatives do not have a
vote. Members should be aware that matters of concern to them can be
raised with the committee by way of a letter to the Secretary and
should be aware that posts on Facebook do not appear on meeting
agendas.

Shortwave Listener Award - The Ian Morris Memorial Trophy

The South Dublin Radio Club, in honour of the late Ian Morris EI6U,
donated this perpetual trophy to the Irish Radio Transmitters Society.
Ian was a member of the committee of the Society for many years and was
a very proficient CW, Field Day and contest operator. The trophy is
awarded at the IRTS Annual General Meeting to the shortwave listener
with the highest number of DXCC entities heard in the previous calendar
year. While confirmation of entities heard is not required, entrants
will be expected to produce a number of QSL cards (not necessarily from
the year in question) to demonstrate their commitment to Shortwave
Listening.

South Eastern Amateur Radio Group

The South Eastern Amateur Radio Group were active from the Old Copper
Mine near Bunmahon, Co. Waterford over the weekend of the 5th & 6th
June 2021. This location is normally used for the Geopark activation
every year and while there was no official Geopark event this year, the
club decided to put a station on the air so that members could have a
well-deserved break and have some fun over the weekend after the club
activities being so quite in the previous months. The crew arrived on
Friday and set up the station. Over the weekend, stations from around
Europe were logged on both SSB and CW. With the weather being so nice
the group had lots of interest from people who were visiting the
location. Some people even came back twice to see the station in
operation. Visitors were amazed how the hobby works and could not
believe that a small length of wire was able to transmit our voices to
countries around Europe. Hopefully, the interest shown will lead to
many more people taking up the hobby of amateur radio. EI2WRC would
like to thank John Galloway, Manager of the Geopark Centre, Bunmahon
for giving us access to the site. Thanks to all the club members who
attended over the weekend and a special thanks to all those who cooked
over the weekend or brought food to the event. Also, a massive thanks
to Fehin, from Fairmak Design in Tramore for the amazing job on the
graphics on the club caravan. Even though there was not much radio
activity done over the weekend everyone there agreed that it was great
to be able to see old friends again and have a chat and a catch up
which everyone needed after the lockdowns over the past year or so.
Many laughs were shared over the weekend and a great weekend was had by
all who attended and the club cannot wait for their next activation.
For anyone that wishes to find out more about the South Eastern Amateur
Radio Group and their activities you can drop them an email to
southeasternarg /at/ gmail.com or please feel free to go along to any
of their meetings. You can check their website www.searg.ie and you can
also join them on Facebook and follow them on Twitter.

2022 Hamvention News

Anyone who attended the Dayton Hamvention will know that getting
suitable hotel rooms is never easy. Next year, contest-related
activities that have previously taken place at the Crowne Plaza Hotel
are moving to the Hope Hotel. Room reservations are now being taken by
the Hope Hotel and you can get room reservations by phone only. If you
try to book on-line you will see that there are no rooms for those
dates. Every room in the Hope Hotel has been blocked booked for
Contesters and DXers for Hamvention week. You can call the hotel on
937-879-2696 and ask for a reservation in the Contest University 2022
room block. There is no minimum night commitment. The room rate is 143
US Dollars per night plus tax and that includes a hot buffet breakfast
each day of your stay.
