Default May 22, 2007 ARS License Numbers

These are the number of current,
unexpired FCC-issued amateur
radio licenses held by individuals
on the stated dates, and the
percentage of the total number
of active licenses that class contains.

Percentages may not add up to exactly
100.0% due to rounding.

These totals do not include licenses
that have expired but are in the grace
period, nor do they include club, military
and other station-only licenses.

Effective April 15, 2000, FCC no longer issued
new Novice, Technician Plus and Advanced
class licenses, so the numbers of those license
classes have declined steadily since then.

Also since April 15, 2000, FCC has renewed all
existing Technician Plus licenses as Technician.
It is therefore informative to consider the totals of
the two classes, since the Technician class
includes a significant number of Technician Plus
licenses renewed as Technician.

On February 23, 2007, the last Morse Code
test element, the 5 wpm receiving test, was
eliminated as a requirement.

The ARS License Numbers:

According to the group's charter it is open to all. The ARRL makes
all those numbers available free to all, derived from the FCC license
database. US license numbers can be seen also at www.hamdata.com.

AFAIK, it's not US only.

I'm not a moderator, but I'd be very interested in seeing amateur
radio license statistics from other countries.

This is absolutely not a US-only group. In fact, I would personally be
interested in trends in license statistics in other countries.

Please can somebody post rec.radio.amateur.moderated's charter to the group.

There is a periodic posting to the group that includes posting
guidelines. See message ID
or
http://preview.tinyurl.com/3xpvng [same article at Google].

If you want to see the charter, visit
http://www.panix.com/~rram/usenet/rram/ and click on the "Charter" link.

Basically, this is a newsgroup that hosts discussion of all aspects of
amateur radio, with a few exceptions like commercial or for-sale articles.

The group is of course open to all. On behalf of the moderation team,
welcome :-)

BTW it's good to see another UK callsign here, I was beginning to think I
was on my own g

For info, the charter can be found here, along with links to other useful
information:

We've been watching the US statistics because of the recent
elimination of Morse code testing. Most of the world dropped code a few
years ago. Therefore, it is in foreign countries that more conclusive
data might be found. That is, in foreign countries, the results of the
experiment may already be in, so to speak.

I'm more interested in the general issue of the health of the hobby than
the specific correlation with a code requirement. Here in the US, I see
potential ham radio operators spending their time with computers and not
impressed by the concept of being able to communicate with people all
over the world because they can do that by opening their cell phone. I
wonder how the population of amateur radio enthusiasts is holding up in
countries where there might be less computers but more cell phones.
There's a very different dynamic in less-developed countries and I don't
know whether it favors the hobby. For example, people might be more
motivated to explore amateur radio but unable to do so because equipment
is not available.
