Default GB2RS NEWS Sunday 1 July 2007

1 GB2RS NEWS Sunday 1 July

The news headlines

* RSGB President opens Friedrichshafen show

* Red Sands Radio to broadcast RSL operation

* Special call signs for 50th JOTA Last weekend RSGB President Angus
Annan was given the rare honour of making the opening address at the
annual Friedrichshafen radio show. His speech, delivered to an invited
audience and relayed to a giant screen, covered the recent successes
and tribulations of the amateur radio scene.

A ten day Restricted Service Licence (RSL) operation will take place
from 14 to 23 July from the same Fort used by British offshore
broadcaster Radio 390 in 1964 to 1967.

The location is Red Sands Fort, seven nautical miles off Whitstable in
Kent. Ofcom has allocated 1278kHz for the operation. For those outside
the local area, the programmes will be streamed online.

Red Sands Radio will pay tribute to the pirate radio stations of the
1960's that influenced how commercial radio developed in Britain. There
will also be some of the original programmes and radio documentaries
with a mix of the best of yesterday and today.

Red Sands Radio is part of the overall Project Redsand who have long
term plans to preserve the last full set of Army Forts for future
generations.

Ofcom has agreed to issue special call signs to all UK JOTA stations
this year in recognition of the role that the event has played in
enabling scouts to talk to other scouts around the world by amateur
radio.

When applying for one of these licences you must observe the following
instructions that are associated with this special event call sign.

* The call sign is only available for the 50 hours of JOTA, from 19
October 2200 local time to 21

October 2400 local time.

* All applications must be made within 28 days of the event, no late
applications will be accepted.

* All applications must, in keeping with the SSES policy, be
accompanied by a supporting letter signed

by the scout leader or equivalent from the troop that the SSES will be
representing. Applications should be made on the usual form, OfW287
that can be found on the Ofcom website. During the Irish Radio
Transmitters Society's Jubilee expedition to Swaziland, the team met
with the Scout Association and agreed to support their Thirst for Life
Programme, which helps Aids orphans in Swaziland.

Details of the project are on the Afri75 page of the IRTS website. The
team is also pleased to announce that the first initial funding for the
project of 350 Euro is on its way to Swaziland and this will fund the
purchase of chickens for their farm.

The money was raised by donations from direct QSL cards received from
stations around the world, together with the sale of Afri75 caps at the
AGM in Cork.

The team is still anxious to continue support for the project, and if
you think you can help please contact Paul, EI2CA.

2 Nominations for the 2007 AMSAT Board of Directors have closed. The
list of qualified candidates is: Barry Baines, WD4ASW, Drew
Glasbrenner, KO4MA, Rick Hambly, W2GPS, Lee McLamb, KU4OS, Gunther
Meisse, W8GSM.

The terms of four directors are up this year. Directors serve a two
year term. Ballots and biographical information submitted by each
candidate will be in the mail to current AMSAT members by 15 July and
completed ballots must be received at the AMSAT office in Silver Spring
no later than the close of business on 15 September. Terms of the new
directors start upon certification of the election.

Gloucester County RAYNET Team has now received clearance for the use of
two VHF frequencies during their support for the Royal International
Air Tattoo at Fairford on 10, 12, 14 and 15 July.

The choice of working frequencies at any operational RAF base has
always been agreed with MoD to avoid any possibility of interference
with vital communications traffic. This year, Gloucestershire has been
allocated 144.650 voice and 144.625 data.

They intend to use directional antennas to try to minimise problems for
other RAYNET Groups working in the area, but advise that they will not
be allowed to QSY in the event of co-channel interference and ask for
the cooperation and understanding of other groups in their choice of
working frequencies.

The Maidstone ARS has recently carried out two special event days one
for the Windmills On The Air and another for the 30 years of sailing at
Bewl Water in Lamberhurst, Kent.

These two events were well supported by two other clubs, The Weald and
North Kent ARS. Both stations operated on 2 meters and HF and in the
case of Bewl Water over 400 QSOs were made. This excellent site which
is surrounded by plenty of water demonstrated how propagation can be
improved. Two particular contacts were VP8LP Bob in Stanley on the
Falkland Islands and to keep the sailing connection EA0SAT was the
special event station for The Americas Cup.

The World Scout Jamboree, GB100J, will be held in Hylands Park,
Chelmsford from 24 July to 8 August. It is expected that over 40,000
scouts from all over the world will attend the event.

The Chelmsford Echolink Node MB7IDA, node number 265297, on 144.8375
MHz, 110.9 Hz CTCSS, covers 8 seperate scouting camp sites in Essex. It
is the closest node to the Jamboree site and it is requested that
scouts be given priority on the node during this event.

On Sunday 1 July the RSGB will be supporting British Wireless for the
Blind with the participation by Angus Annan, MM1CCR, RSGB President and
Marilyn Slade, 2E1GKR, Financial Controller in the British London 10K
run. For more details contact British Wireless for the Blind at
www.blind.org.uk.

RAYNET groups in many parts of the country were placed on standby at
the weekend as torrential rains caused rivers to overflow.

The RSGB Sheffield and Rotherham RAYNET Group were called out on Sunday
to provide point to point communications and finally stood down on
Tuesday evening. Controller Mark Harrison, G6NVT, commented that it had
been an exhausting 30 hours.

Now the solar factual data for the period from the 18 to 24 of June,
compiled by Neil Clarke, G0CAS.

The Sun was spotless every day. Solar activity was very low. Solar flux
levels declined from 67 units on the 18th to 65 by the 22nd, levels
then returned back to 67 by the 24th. The average was 66 units. The
daily solar flux figure on the 22nd was 65 units. This would appear to
be as low as the solar flux can go. During the last solar minimum only
three days saw the solar flux at 65 units, they took place in July
1996. The 90 day solar flux average on the 24th remained at 74 units.
X-ray flux levels remained well below the A1 level throughout.
Geomagnetic activity started at quiet levels but as expected increased
on the 21st due to a recurring coronal hole. The most disturbed day was
the 22nd with an Ap index of 16 units. The average was Ap 9 units. The
ACE spacecraft saw solar wind speeds increase from 370 kilometres per
second to 580 by the 22nd. Particle densities were low except for the
21st, which increased to 38 particles per cubic centimetre late on the
21st. Bz varied between minus 2 and plus 4 nanoTeslas on the quiet days
and between minus 9 and plus 10 nanoTeslas during the disturbance. In a
week of typical summer propagation the principal feature was again
sporadic-E, with several strong 6- metre openings to the northern
fringe of South America, the Caribbean and the Gambia, and smaller ones
to the North-East USA.

5 And now the solar forecast. This week the active side of the Sun is
expected to be looking our way. On the last solar rotation, activity
increased to moderate on some days, however, this rotation activity
should only be low. Solar flux levels are expected to slowly decline
and by next weekend be in the low 70's. Geomagnetic activity should be
quiet all week. MUFs during daylight hours at equal latitudes should be
around 19MHz for the south and 16NHz for the north. The darkness hour
lows are expected to be about 10MHz. Paths this week to Japan should
have a maximum usable frequency with a 50 per cent success rate of
about 18MHz. The optimum working frequency with a 90 per cent success
rate will be around 14MHz. The best time to try this path will be
between 1000 and 1500 hours UTC. Sporadic-E should take place most days
this week with the possibility of openings up to 70MHz and to a lesser
extent to 144MHz. And that's all for this week from the propagation
team.
