1 GB2RS NEWS Sunday 9 September

The news headlines

* 3B7C DXpedition fires up

* Historic callsign returns to air soon

* Guilty verdict in ham murder case

Following the successful arrival of the 3B7C advance party, the
remainder of the team arrived on Isle de Sud by 5 September. The team
immediately set to work putting together the 6m beacon on 50.090MHz.
Work then commenced on creating the numerous other stations to meet the
target start time of midnight on 7 September. Operation will be on all
bands simultaneously, from Top Band to 6m. Details of the DXpedition,
including operating frequencies, propagation forecasts and logs, are on
their web site at www.3B7C.com.

GB2SM, the permanent callsign of the former Science Museum amateur
radio station in London, will shortly be back on the air. It will be
based at the Science Museum's Swindon site. A unique arrangement has
been made between the Science Museum and the Swindon and District
Amateur Radio Club. The Notice of Variation for the callsign will be
held by the club on behalf of the Science Museum. GB2SM will be used in
partnership with the Science Museum at events and activities that
specifically promote the Science Museum and communications inspired
projects. For this purpose the callsign will be treated as a Special
Event Callsign rather than a permanent call. Should a permanent amateur
radio station be re-established at the London site the callsign would
automatically revert to the permanent station.

Courts in Gambia recently sentenced two men to life imprisonment for
the murder of Ron Ford, G3NKO. Tourist Mr Ford was killed in by two
Gambian nationals in September 2002 while on holiday in the region.
Passing sentence on Dawda Bojang and Kawsu Jarju in the Kanifing
Magistrates' court, magistrate Buba Jawo said the evidence before the
court had clearly shown that the prosecution has proven their case.

The first International Pumping Stations on the Air event was held over
the August bank holiday weekend and was a huge success. It was
organized by Burton Amateur Radio Club and operated from Claymills
Pumping Station. 12 stations registered to get involved in this new
event. 128 stations contacted the club over the weekend, 79 on 2m and
49 on HF (SSB and CW). Their greatest distance was WN3R, Richard, in
Rockville MD, USA on 20m SSB. Everyone who took part will receive a
special event QSL card via the bureau. Club Secretary, Steve Warren,
2E0KPO, commented that he was pleased by the amount of pumping stations
that took part and the number of visitors to the event. Now the group
know the event was a success they are going to make arrangements for
awards next year. They are planning on operating on the August bank
holiday again next year. Anyone interested should log onto
www.burtonarc.co.uk.

2 South Notts Amateur Radio Club has been awarded nearly #2,000 from

4 Now the solar factual data for the period from 27 August to 2
September, compiled by Neil Clarke, G0CAS Solar activity continued at
very low levels, even though, on the 1st two sunspot groups were
visible. Solar flux levels started at 69 units then increased to 72 by
the 30th. Levels then declined back to 69 by the 2nd. The average was
70 units. The 90 day solar flux average on the 2nd was 71, that's one
unit down on last week. X-ray flux levels remained below the minimum A1
level throughout. Geomagnetic activity was at quiet levels but due to a
well positioned coronal hole activity increased on the 1st and the 2nd
with an Ap index of 11 and 23 units respectively. The average was Ap 11
units. The ACE spacecraft saw solar wind speeds increase from 360
kilometres per second to 690 by the 2nd. Particle densities were low
except for the 1st, which increased slightly. Bz on the quiet days
varied between minus 2 and plus 4 nanoTeslas and between minus and plus
8 nanoTeslas on the 2nd. The HF bands remained much the same as the
last few weeks. There as been some DX at times for those you are around
at the right time. Likewise, sporadic-E took place occasionally.
Stations in the far north had the best of any auroral propagation
conditions last weekend. And finally the solar forecast. This week the
quiet side of the Sun is expected to be looking our way. Solar activity
is expected to be very low. Solar flux levels should be in the 60's for
most of the week. Geomagnetic activity should be mostly quiet. Saying
that, activity could increase due to a small coronal hole on Tuesday or
Wednesday. On it's last rotation, the hole had almost disappeared. MUFs
during daylight hours at equal latitudes should be around 18MHz for the
south and 15MHz for the north. The darkness hour lows are expected to
be about 8MHz. Paths this week to Australia should have a maximum
usable frequency with a 50 per cent success rate of around 19MHz. The
optimum working frequency with a 90 per cent success rate will be about
15MHz. The best time to try this path will be between 1000 and 1500
hours UTC. And that's all for this week from the propagation team.
