Waveform portability?

In the context of the news release quoted below, what does the term "waveform
portability" mean?

"FT. WAYNE, Ind. - PrismTech Solutions Americas, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary
of PrismTech Corporation, has been selected to provide waveform portability
support to the U.S. Navy's software-defined radio (SDR) systems. The work will
be conducted through a support services contract overseen by the U.S. Navy's
Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR). Scientific Research
Corporation (SRC) serves as the prime contractor."

Anyone for another round of "buzzword bingo"?

Briefly, it means interoperability. The running joke of course is
that "Analog has always been inter operable". In context to the
various divergent digital encoding (not encryption) schemes out
there.

Sort of like a properly designed Java(tm) application working
properly regardless of what operating system you're running it
on.

The military has traditionally been a closed environment with
"this project uses this system" which makes passing information
between the systems difficult at best.

But then, the tower of babel was the original solution to the
one world government issue. ;-)

Hans, as a retired Senior Master Chief, and with your experience in
the civilian side of the industry, you are undoubtedly aware that that
is a buzzword to justify awarding a contract to some "favorite son"
consultant/manufacturer who will deliver equipment that the guys "on
the street" so to speak will beta test and find all the bugs and come
up with practical solutions that the contractors couldn't think of -
stuff that ham operators used to do "back in the day".....

There, I've had my rant.....
