I still copy it a lot (W1AW machine-sent bulletins) but don't send much. My top speed was 25 WPM. Back when I did use CW enough to want a good keyer paddle, I asked K2KIR what he recommended - being a CW traffic hound. He suggested one made by Brown Brothers (of St Louis, as I recall). I got one and never regretted it. It is very solid, feels great, less filling, no problems at all. It's iambic (though I learned on a keyer before iambics were common, so I don't use it that way). I haven't seen an ad for one in a long time, so I don't know whether they are available any more or not. If so, I recommend them. /Rcc (K1BC) ARPA: clements@bbn USENET: {ihnp4, decvax, linus, etc}!bbncca!clements PACKET: K1BC @ K1BC From net.ham-radio Sat Jan 16 08:58:06 2016 Relay-Version: version B 2.10 5/3/83; site utzoo.UUCP Posting-Version: version B 2.10.3 4.3bsd-beta 6/6/85; site decwrl.DEC.COM Path: utzoo!watmath!clyde!burl!ulysses!gamma!epsilon!zet a!sabre!petrus!bellcore!decvax!decwrl!dec-rhea!dec-4315!koning From: (Paul Koning -- LAS Engineering) Newsgroups: net.ham-radio Subject: what kind of keyer do you like? It was completely free of backlash or play because it basically consisted of two paddles hinged at the back by broad leaf springs. Maybe someday he or I will write it up... I once tried the Vibroplex paddle. Perhaps it was misadjusted, but it felt like a piece of garbage. Loose bearings and generally unpleasant. Considering their reputation, I was quite surprised; now I wouldn't even consider one. In fact, any mechanism that needs adjustment to be free from play isn't designed right. (The Bencher passes on that test judging by the picture; I've never tried one.) I seem to have lost my own paddle in the last move, but when I start looking for one again I'll probably start with the homemade kind, and only if I run into trouble with that would I consider buying one. paul pa0pkg From net.ham-radio Sat Jan 16 08:58:06 2016 Relay-Version: version B 2.10 5/3/83; site utzoo.UUCP Posting-Version: version B 2.10.2 9/18/84; site kvue.UUCP Path: utzoo!linus!decvax!decwrl!pyramid!ut-sally!im4u!oakhill!kvue!sparks From: (Ed Sparks) Newsgroups: net.ham-radio Subject: What kind of keys do you like? Lines: 17 Xref: dummy dummy:1 X-OldUsenet-Modified: added Xref All you Brass Pounders out there, please help! What type of keys/keyers/paddles do you like? I've been using a J-38 straight key for years, and also an old Heathkit HD-1510 keyer. But now, having used a friend's Bencher for a few weeks, I'm ready to look for a better key! Both the Bencher and the Vibroplex Iambic look like fine choices, and both are about the same price. But each has its strengths and weaknesses. I will eventually try both, side by side... but until I can (there's no Vibroplex dealer in Austin) I would welcome your comments and recommendations! 73, Ed Edward Sparks, WA5ZEG KVUE-TV Austin, TX ) {asci1,ihnp4,seismo,gatech,harvard,ctvax,ucbvax}!u t-sally!kvue!sparks From net.ham-radio Sat Jan 16 08:58:06 2016 Relay-Version: version B 2.10 5/3/83; site utzoo.UUCP Posting-Version: $Revision: 1.6.2.13 $; site hpuslma.UUCP Path: utzoo!watmath!clyde!cbosgd!ihnp4!ltuxa!we53!busch! wucs!wuphys!hpuslma!scott From: Newsgroups: net.ham-radio Subject: What kind of keys do you like? My wife gave me a Meisel Music paddle for Christmas so that's what I am using right now. I am sure that it may not be as good as the Bencher or Vibroplex, but I got a good price on it! One thing is for sure--it does beat my J38 and old bug that I once used! Hope to catch you on CW someday. 73, Jim N0GLP Hewlett Packard St. Louis From net.ham-radio Sat Jan 16 08:58:06 2016 Relay-Version: version B 2.10 5/3/83; site utzoo.UUCP Posting-Version: version B 2.10.2 9/17/84; site mhuxd.UUCP Path: utzoo!watmath!clyde!cbosgd!ihnp4!mhuxd!res1 From: (STEALEY) Newsgroups: net.ham-radio Subject: What kind of keys do you like? Beautiful construction, and much better price. Also it is a twin paddle, squeeze keyer, whereas the old vibro keyer was not iambic. Vibroplex does make a n iambic model now, however.
