Yes to all that, but the point I wanted to make was that CW is another way to get a message through. It's another tool in the tool box that can be used when other tools are not available. It's another tool in the tool box that can be used when other tools are not available. Of course - but is it such a useful and necessary tool that it *must* be in *every* radio amateur's toolbox just in case no other tool is available? A ham that doesn't know CW doesn't have that tool. True. But a ham who doesn't have a PSK-31 setup doesn't have that tool. A ham who cannot operate (due to rig, antenna, and/or license limitiations) on every amateur band and mode doesn't have those tools either. Hope he has a spare mic. How often do microphones fail at a critical moment, anyway? Seems like a spare mike in the toolbox is a good idea. And while we're talking of toolboxes, Do you have every possible tool, plus all the skill and knowledge, needed to fix your rigs and antennas if they were to break at a critical moment? --- I'm all for Morse Code tests and hams having lots of knowledge and skills. But the idea that all hams must pass Morse Code tests solely because there might someday arise an emergency where they had to use Morse Code is just not convincing to me at all. |
