REAL Amateur radio is accomplished by using radios and antennas, not
computers and phone lines. Interesting, my Link on ECHOLink uses Radio and ants. |

Hmm ... this makes twice now for me. Once VE7DGL had to get hold of me and
used Echo Link - and my HT fired up and I got the needed "heads up". Today, I needed to get hold of Hatton, NI5Y, and he wasn't on the internet. Well, I linked to his machine and he answered via his HT. It does work. There were radios on one end in both instances. ![]() Or is DXCC the only thing that counts? I have little use for those folks. I'm sure some are decent, but the one time I wanted to run a phone patch from the US Naval Hospital on Guam and the DX boys thought phone patches shouldn't be allowed on their day ... well ... as I said, I've little use for 'em. 73 from Rochester, NY Jim AA2QA "Dan/W4NTI" w4nti@get rid of this mindspring.com wrote in message ink.net... Echolink is not "real" Amateur radio anyway...it is merely a glorified, huge chat room for those with Amateur radio licenses. REAL Amateur radio is accomplished by using radios and antennas, not computers and phone lines. Oh...so Echo Link is like playing a airplane video game and thinking your a 'real' pilot? I'm glad that someone worked out the methodology whether or not I ever make any use of it. The methodology is really pretty simple, an internet version of a phone patch. The ho-hum aspect as I see it is that allowing an HT to patch into the internet is analogous to simply using a telephone. Others may differ, thinking this is some high tech thing to add to the ham arsenal. In fact, it seems to me that an application would be to allow cell phone users to call a number, patch into the net, and then speak to hams. And since people can bootleg a number so easily, I wouldn't be surprised if this isn't already happening. - Mike KB3EIA - |

Echolink is not "real" Amateur radio anyway... Let's see now..... ..... I'm on a wilderness lake in the BWCA with my VX-5R, call the 147.24 machine in Ely, bring up the code for my home 444.125 machine 250 miles away in Golden Valley, and chat with my unfortunate friends who are on their way to work in the city. What's not "real" about that? 73, Hans, K0HB -- Posted via Mailgate.ORG Server - http://www.Mailgate.ORG |

And I know that if I use Echolink on my PC here in NJ USA to connect to a machine say in Romania, that my voice is being transmitted on some 2m or 440 freq over there. I just happen to be using a very long microphone cable..... I've had QSOs with hams in Japan who were mobile. Guys suprized to hear an American white trash voice on their local repeater. :-) |
