Bill:

What's wrong with holding an out-of-area call sign? I spent seven years as
N3CRA while stationed in Germany and New York, and subsequently spent
six years as WR2F while stationed in Colorado and Delaware. Holding an
out-of-area call sign has been "legal" for at least as long as I've been a ham,
and that's over 23 years now.

Wayne now seems to be a sucker for every half-baked idea that comes along.
(heard the program, sad.)

I heard the broadcast myself, in it's entirety. It made me cringe. If I had
not been
reading his "Never Say Die" Editorials (purely for fun) in 73 Magazine for
years, I
would have thought that this guy was a total fruitcake, and so must be everyone
else who claims to be a "ham radio" operator. I'm concerned that a lot of
non-ham listeners may have reached that very conclusion, but then again, those
who listen to "Coast to Coast" are probably already predisposed in that
direction. The only reason I listened was that I was taking a long night-drive
from Delaware to New York, and that W2NSD just happened to be the "Guest
Nutcase" that evening.

The rule at the time was you were supposed to change the call to where you
lived. Even had to notify the gummit when you were on the move.

Wayne came up with a novel approach to the problem, but most people couldn't
use that solution.

It's just that once it became ok to take your call with you, it was one less
thing to have as an issue in 73.

What was his solution? I know he grumbled about being issued a new
callsign just as he was ready to move yet again, but I don't recall
how he got around it. Well, of course once he moved to New Hampshire
and stopped moving around, he kept W2NSD and operated portable. I believe
he said that he couldn't get W1NSD (though he had had "NSD" in various
districts), so he just kept W2NSD. I can't remember how he kept being
able to get "NSD" either.

I believe he used his parents address in NYC as his mailing address,
but were they around up till the time the rule about needing a callsign
to match the district disappeared?

Kids today, they don't know what it was like in the old days. Having
to log everything, and having to notify their governing when they moved.
If I'm remembering, here in Canada you even had to notify if it was
a relatively short move, like operating from a country house for
two months in the summer. Little or no choice in what callsign you
were issued.
