He just joined our club. Comes to first meeting. It's pretty obvious he's is the hyperactive overbearing type, talks constantly & loudly, dominates the discussion. Says he quit such & such club because "they didn't like this and didn't want to do that, they were a bunch of losers." Volunteers to head up all the committees, wants to bring in outside speakers that will offer this or that to the club members. (The outside speakers are family members or buddies of his). Does the majority of speaking at the meeting. Again, makes mention of how his last club was a bunch of losers and how happy he is to be a member of this great club! At his third club meeting, he does ALL the talking and is the center of attention. Some club members say they like him, others remain silent. Can't wait to see what happens at the fourth meeting with this guy. We're betting he will run the entire meeting himself. A. I see our club breaking up, because some will agree with this guy and others will want no part of him. B. I see this guy being challenged and told to shut up, which will probably result in him leaving our club, since we're all "losers." Have you seen this guy before? Has he come to your club meetings? If you been in a radio club, you've seen your share of characters. Ham radio has no shortage of all types of personalities. Ever see this guy before? He just joined our club. Oh yes. Once in a great while somebody like that shows up. Sometimes they do it on a larger scale than the local club - Wayne Green is a prime example. Comes to first meeting. It's pretty obvious he's is the hyperactive overbearing type, talks constantly & loudly, dominates the discussion. Says he quit such & such club because "they didn't like this and didn't want to do that, they were a bunch of losers." Shows up second meeting & proposes all sorts of changes to what the club has been doing, wants to start this & do that, & go here and there. Can't wait to see what happens at the fourth meeting with this guy. We're betting he will run the entire meeting himself. Does your club have officers and a formal agenda? The trick is to let him actually *do* something. Let him bring in the speakers or run the committees. A. I see our club breaking up, because some will agree with this guy and others will want no part of him. Give him a chance to show what he can do. B. I see this guy being challenged and told to shut up, which will probably result in him leaving our club, since we're all "losers." The trick is to give him an outlet for his energy. Have you seen this guy before? Has he come to your club meetings? He's nothing new. In the "Rotten Radio" stories of 80+ years ago "T.O.M." describes the cast of characters at most radio club meetings. Your new guy sounds like "Final Authority". Put him in charge of getting a speaker and see what happens. 73 de Jim, N2EY |

Well, there was T.O.M. himself ("The Old Man" - radio back then was a young man's game, and someone over the age of 40 being involved in it was almost a fossil). There was Young Squirt, with all the enthusiasm and optimism of youth. 73 de Jim, N2EY |

No, but I've seen enough of that type to know that they are bad news. Your "great club" will be great as long as he gets his way, but perhaps not even then, as this type of personality cannot be pleased for long. Do what you will, but in 6 months, a year, whatever his particular time frame is, all that will change. He'll want to kick the president out of office because of one reason or the other. The sad thing is, he'll probably be able to get plenty enough people on his side. Then after the prez goes, he'll fixate on another so called loser. But inevitably, he'll quit. No one or group can ever live up to his expectations. The combination of the continued bitching about the previous club, and the hyper aggressive early behavior are dead giveaways. No normal person tries to change a club at their second meeting. You really do have a serious problem. Best approach is to either dump him, or to try to channel that seemingly boundless energy. The first solution is the best. Some people might say "people complain about no one wanting to do anything, and someone shows up that does, and you want to get rid of him." But that isn't the case. You're dealing with an off center character here. - Mike KB3EIA - |

We're betting he will run the entire meeting himself. At one club I belong to (not radio, but here we are talking about human interaction skills) a prospective member needs to visit and participate in various activities (mostly informal and not at all arduous tasks) for 8 separate club meetings (most meetings are informal gatherings in the club house Tuesdays and Fridays) (need not be consequitive). The purpose of this requirement is to get to know the new guy and to see if we get along and like each other. Someone obnoxious like the above radio club member is less likely to be invited to join after 8 visits. And he as a visiter would not be able to commandeer meetings and the club. This filtering process has worked well, and we haven't had any serious interpersonal problems (fist fights and such) happen. And we have a diverse group of people anyway. Once this guy decides that you're a club of "losers" and leaves, consider installing a new member filter like this. |
