Yep -but neither that fact nor even amateur radio are mentioned in the
article.

Reading the comments to the article are intersting too. Some commenters try to
discredit the author based solely on the fact that he is a ham, regardless of
the technical merit of his arguments.

Great article nonetheless.

"Beware the BPL Buzz" was really a great commentary on the BPL nonsense,
written as dispassionately as possible. Heck, even a lawyer type might be
able to understand the problem if they read what Peter Coffee had to say.

And without actually saying it, Mr. Coffee makes the point that the
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers represents the business
end of the "technical profession," not the technical end - even though the
majority of their membership is comprised of engineers doing technical
development and support work. At least, that is my take on the IEEE's
failure to take note of the severe technical problems associated with
deploying BPL nationwide.

Let's see - as of August 2004 - 675,532 hams in the U.S., while the IEEE
(http://www.ieee.org/portal/index.jsp?pageID=homeonly) claims 360,000
members worldwide. I would say that if any significant part of that 675K ham
membership got politically incensed and active with regard to the BPL
nonsense, we could have quite a bit of influence just from our numbers.
Right-and-sensible can win out over wrong-and-stupid if those in favor of
right&sensible get organized. We must be focused, and make it clear to those
legislators who operate mostly by the golden rule (Those who have the gold
makes the rules - to suite themselves.) that their re-election could be
affected by their making a "right" choice for a change.

BPL will thrive or whither based on the success of their business model.

"Greed" is the only "business model" under examination when the BPL issues
goes under the technical microscope. It's all about money, not "access" or
good business.
