Yes, except for a little terrorist activity which has not proved to be
worth my worry lately--this dropping of CW seems to be the most
exciting thing in some people life... yawn

I agree. With the congestion on CB and there being only 40 chans
for
all the truck drivers, four wheelers, base stations and freebanders,
it is a mess.

More bandwidth has been needed for over a decade.

More than THREE decades, John. CB is 47 years old. The sudden
explosion of imported transceivers on the marketplace took
place in the early 1960s.

Most do want to chat with others in other countries, "skip" will be
the mode of the day on HF--at least I'd imagine that to be the case.

Sorry, you can't really say "skip" in here. That's a four-
letter word used by CBers, as in "shooting skip." :-)

One can still "pioneer the airwaves below 200 meters!" That's
the MYTH. Of course the commercial and government and military
people already did that early, used it, and moved on. :-)
[I was there, on it, helping to use it, 50 years ago...]

However, I have never seen a real case of where what actually
happens
is able to be "prophesized" accurately before the actual
situation--it
will be interesting to watch.

No? Oh, my, I've met dozens of "nostrahamus" predictors in
my time. The ham sky fell in 1958 when CODELESS, TESTLESS
CB happened on HF!!! The ham sky fell in 1990 when FCC 90-53
created the NO CODE TEST Technician (ugh, ptui, spit) was
to start in 1991. The ham sky fell in 1999 when the latest
"restructuring" was ordered to take place in 2001 with the
maximum rate of 5 WPM for ALL morse code tests!

The ham sky has fallen so many times that it's a wonder the
Earth hasn't turned into an ultra dense ball of neutrons. :-)

WT Docket 05-235 is going to turn out to be more of a TITLE,
RANK, PRIVILEGE bust for the ham "nobility." Oh, they will
still trumpet their high-skill morsemanship as the "best of
the best [morse] operators" and snarl at all others for being
mere "yakkers into a mike." The snarls will still be there,
frozen into rictus grins when they assume room temperature.

The FCC defines U.S. amateur radio operators as (partly)
having a "proven unique ability to enhance international
goodwill." Funny, they don't comment about their unique
ability to be as quarrelsome as possible domestically...

It's a Great Day a Dawning! Huzzah! :-)

Yup. Then the "barrier" folks will find another excuse.

Yep.

Just like with Novice Enhancement, the introduction of the NCT
and
Restructuring...

I find it laughable that the FCC would use the same worn out
and
obviously untrue language that "this" change will bring all those
technically-oriented people into the Amateur fold. They said the
exact
same thing with the last three aforementioned evolutions and it
wasn't
true then.

Indeed we dropped the Code Test in 91 for 97% of all Amateur
allocations, including the highly sought after VHF/UHF spectrum.
The
REAL argument has been over that last 3%, or the HF allocations.
So
where were all those engineering-types then?

People like "You-Know-Who" have been arguing that his ilk don't
get licenses due to not being able to get on HF...Yet they ALSO
argue
that the license is most valuable for experimenting. Well...All of
the
REAL "experimenting" is going on ABOVE 30MHz, not below it, so the
argument is moot. They, like everyone else, want to get on HF and
"shoot skip", nothing more.

I'm betting that it remains CW for Extra, and no code for
Generals, unless the FCC want's to disband the phone-vs-narrow band
subdivisions. I think there will be sufficient argument to keep
that
much.

I'm betting that it will go just like the NPRM is now and that is
code elimination across the board. They specifically discussed the
proposals that had that concept in it and discounted the
possibility.

The next two arguments are going to be to squeeze all of the
non-voice modes into 50 or 75KHz of spectrum on each band since all
of
those new codeless Generals will want to spead out, and to have
only
one or two license classes.

You know I doubt this as those who really wanted General upgraded
anyway. Of those who haven't upgraded yet, many are relatively
inactive anyhow.

As far as two license classes go, FCC is not considering it right
now and it won't really matter what they do as I believe that there
will be a de facto two class system.

When that is done we can remove all references to training and
technical/operational competency from the Basis and Purpose of Part
97.
Shortly thereafter we can move all of Part 97 to Part 95. Maybe
re-write both parts into one, new, Part 96?

Perhaps we can also add new bands at 061, 08, 04, 03 etc Meters
so
those claiming unfairness in testing criteria due to "dyslexia" can
operate legally...?!?!

The amazing thing was that it's taken two years to get

More likely it took that long because the FCC had more
important stuff to deal with.

They didn't ban Morse Code. They just dropped the
license test for it. CW will survive anyway.

We ought to start CW training nets to get hams to
get into CW. Use the old novice subbands for it.

"Technical" is still covered in the written tests. Aside from
no more CW test, "operational" still has a few questions in the
writtens. Oh, people newly licensed will make newbie errors,
but most people are smart enough to soon spot and correct
such errors.

Remember that 14.313 was that way back in the days of 13wpm

Steve,

So far (cross fingers) cw is legal *anywhere* in the ham bands (other
than,
I believe, 60 meters) so long as one's license class permits transmitting.

I have, in the past, found it an excellent way of confounding someone who
jumps on me (of course, that was when all amateurs had some ability on
cw -
a minimum of 13 words per minute on hf in the voice bands). Funny thing
how
Mike, W2OY's killerwatt couldn't touch my 75 watts LOL. Even funnier was
the way his blood pressure was going up whilst I continued a nice contact
with Ohio despite his best efforts. Both the other guy and I could handle
cw quite well. After a number of "qrq" sent back and fourth, we were
humming along at a nice rate, neither pushing speed limits nor plodding
along. It was somewhere in the neighborhood of 35 to 45 words per minute
and we continued for a good half hour more. Every now and then, I'd open
the rx bandwidth to hear Mike screaming "take those toys down into the cw
band". Sure, Mike, just don't hold your breath. snort

loads of bandwidth out there that are not being utilized. Anyone who has

Yup. Then the "barrier" folks will find another excuse.

Yep.

Just like with Novice Enhancement, the introduction of the
NCT and
Restructuring...

People like "You-Know-Who" have been arguing that his ilk
don't
get licenses due to not being able to get on HF...Yet they ALSO
argue
that the license is most valuable for experimenting. Well...All
of the
REAL "experimenting" is going on ABOVE 30MHz, not below it, so
the
argument is moot. They, like everyone else, want to get on HF
and
"shoot skip", nothing more.

I'm betting that it remains CW for Extra, and no code for
Generals, unless the FCC want's to disband the phone-vs-narrow
band
subdivisions. I think there will be sufficient argument to keep
that
much.

I'm betting that it will go just like the NPRM is now and that is
code elimination across the board. They specifically discussed
the proposals that had that concept in it and discounted the
possibility.

The next two arguments are going to be to squeeze all of the
non-voice modes into 50 or 75KHz of spectrum on each band since
all of
those new codeless Generals will want to spead out, and to have
only
one or two license classes.

You know I doubt this as those who really wanted General upgraded
anyway. Of those who haven't upgraded yet, many are relatively
inactive anyhow.

As far as two license classes go, FCC is not considering it right
now and it won't really matter what they do as I believe that
there will be a de facto two class system.

When that is done we can remove all references to training
and
technical/operational competency from the Basis and Purpose of
Part 97.
Shortly thereafter we can move all of Part 97 to Part 95. Maybe
re-write both parts into one, new, Part 96?

Perhaps we can also add new bands at 061, 08, 04, 03 etc
Meters so
those claiming unfairness in testing criteria due to "dyslexia"
can
operate legally...?!?!

Ugly. Really ugly. But who of us in the PCTA camp, realistically,
actually had themselves deluded into thinking the FCC would take
any
other path?

This "NPRM" is not "an opportunity to comment", it's an
announcement
about the way it's absolutely gonna be. Period. They'll go thru
the
NPRM motions only because the law sez they have to and they'll
patiently tap their fingers on the table until the deluge of

I could care less about any of it at this late date because none

With an annoying side trip in 1968 to do 20 wpm to reconfirm my

Hello, John

Not isolated; simply realistic. We are either going to learn to live

I haven't been on 160 meters since 1966.

You are correct about the 11 year olds. We've had something like 100
shootings in Rochester so far this year.

May I assume from your post that you like the brave new world .... ?

I'm not for forcing folks to use cw; I'm simply pointing out that many folks
are ignoring certain facts.

Yep, I'm connected on 3 megabaud DSL. I can send a picture so fast .... so
long as something else (in this case a camera) put the information in the
computer first. Hey, I can cut and paste and forward very easily.

I've caught kids making mistakes, even with a calculator, when making
change. One kid had to get the manager to figure it out when she punched a
button showing I paid exact change (no, I gave her a twenty for a purchase a
bit over $12.00). I watched the manager show her how to fix it. Um ...
$21.00? No, I don't think so. He pushed a few more buttons. Over $32.00?

I finally suggested that he clear the whole thing and try again. Meanwhile,
I knew exactly what my change should have been. Another kid at the pharmacy
one time made the same error. He ran it on a calculator and gave me my
change. I gave him a penny and told him to hold on to it as his drawer was
going to be short one cent (assuming he didn't screw up another order in a
different column).

Obviously, you feel that not only should folks not learn The Calculus, they
shouldn't even have to add and subtract since a calculator can do that for
them.

More jobs for India and China.

Many thanks, however, for a good chuckle. Enjoy life whilst there is

Steve,

So far (cross fingers) cw is legal *anywhere* in the ham bands (other
than,
I believe, 60 meters) so long as one's license class permits

transmitting.

I have, in the past, found it an excellent way of confounding someone

who
jumps on me (of course, that was when all amateurs had some ability on
cw -
a minimum of 13 words per minute on hf in the voice bands). Funny thing
how
Mike, W2OY's killerwatt couldn't touch my 75 watts LOL. Even funnier

was
the way his blood pressure was going up whilst I continued a nice

contact
with Ohio despite his best efforts. Both the other guy and I could

handle
cw quite well. After a number of "qrq" sent back and fourth, we were
humming along at a nice rate, neither pushing speed limits nor plodding
along. It was somewhere in the neighborhood of 35 to 45 words per

minute
and we continued for a good half hour more. Every now and then, I'd

open
the rx bandwidth to hear Mike screaming "take those toys down into the

cw
band". Sure, Mike, just don't hold your breath. snort

The difference between the older and newer generation is, if the new
generation does calculations by long hand, then use a calculator to see
if their cyphering was correct. The older generation cyphers on a
calculator, the does it by long hand to see if the calculator is correct.

Hello, John

Actually, I enjoyed your response (did I admit that? For shame! LOL).

If you can type 80 words per minute, you'll certainly beat me. My best
days, years (and years!) ago, I might have been able to keep an average of
75 or so. I did 65 on the typing test on a manual typewriter in high school
after a 1 year business typing course (I can not write or print decently;
readable, perhaps, but not well). I must admit to having slowed a tad (not
a lot, but a bit) as I've aged. Sigh.

I honestly don't know what can or should be changed with amateur radio. If
someone is truly interested in it, they will learn and pass the tests. The
tests are hardly difficult. Heck, I got a commercial telegraph ticket and
never used it. Very difficult technical questions such as "why do you avoid
long horizontal sections of waveguide?". Ooops, that was the radar
endorsement. Everyone should know that radio waves have to bounce up and
down to be reflected. Horizontal doesn't cut it. Right? :))) Common
sense dictates about condensation and many of the questions on the
radiotelegraph, radio telephone, and amateur tickets are simply common
sense. Sure, there are some tougher questions, but common sense will get
you through perhaps 1/3 of the exam. With no study.

The fact is that between cell phones and the Internet, a lot of kids don't
even see why anyone would be interested in radio. Should they not even
think about it until they are 12 or 13, then their minds tend to gravitate
*very* strongly towards the opposite sex and just about anything else seems
unimportant. Been there, worn that T-shirt LOL. I had been bitten,
however, around the age of 11 and the radio bug just didn't completely go
away (although it did fade quite a bit from time to time).

I've seen folks try and start honest threads about what should be done to
try and kickstart amateur radio again. I honestly don't have an answer.
Usually, arguments result.

Eliminating cw may eliminate a "barrier", but how do amateurs interest
others in amateur radio? Forget the barrier as it appears about to be
eliminated.

There are a lot of good CBers, but I certainly don't want folks screaming
"AUDIOOOO" into their mics. I also don't care to hear the "radio cops"
slamming someone for saying something like "my preferred first personal is
...." or "the handle here is ....". All of us were beginners at some point.

Quite frankly, in the early 60s, it was common in amateur radio to use the
term "handle". My guess is that when the CB community picked it up, the
radio cops started condemning it on amateur frequencies.

Unless you fear causing real hate and dissent amongst this group, I'd like
to hear some suggestions concerning getting folks interested in amateur
radio.

As to me, I'm not going anywhere very soon as I've a number of graves I've
yet to p*ss on LOL

key in getting the numbers we need at that time.

I don't even see that as being a "happening thing", Jayson.
Amateur Radio, just like fishing, or NASCAR, or R/C models, etc etc has
always attracted a certain "crowd".

It's not an issue of numbers, it's an issue of why would anyone want to
become an amateur radio operator. Really now, why would you want to do
that? To talk on repeaters? To work some guy on 20 meters? The whole
hobby is passe.

So's dropping a line in the water and trying to hook a fish, but
millions of folks do it every year...Not because it's the only way to
feed their families, but just for fun.

Anyone can get into chat rooms or exchange e-mail with folks
almost anywhere in the world...but there will still be the thrill of
doing it with "wireless".

If you want to attract the bright intelligent minds, you better be
prepared to challenge them. Challenge them to let them in, challenge
them when they get here. Do you think ax.25 is going to attract people?

HA!

Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelllp....Markie wil chime in here and say I
am "attacking" Lennie, but there's been a no code license for just that
very kind of experimentation for 14 years now, and Lennie and hi ilk
have been more than welcome to jump right in and develop all the new
data protocols they'd like to do.

Yet all they whine about is the code test and that 3% of the
allocations that do require a code test.

Why?

Because all THEY are interested in is playing on HF...If all those
engineering types had any interest in obtaining an Amateur Radio
license for "experimenting" purposes, it would be a done deal.

Hmmmm, yeah, I am not sure how anything would thwart a benefit...(?)

Let's face it, marriage too is becoming a thing of the
past, and certainly is no longer a real lifetime commitment for the
younger generations. Gay marriage is probably the final nail in that
coffin.

Uh oh. Yeah, 'dem gays is ruining everything. It's because of them that
parents don't raise their kids with enough gumption to make smart decisions
on love and marriage, and having kids. It's because of them that skillsets
to handle the baggage of everyday life aren't instilled by our society and,
therefore, our children. It's because of them (gays--to remind everyone)
that parents and educators are too busy getting their pockets lined and so
can't raise kids to have more dignity and respect than to go out as a
teen-ager and get pregnant. It's because of them that, well hell, let's
just lay it out there for everyone to see: it's because of those darned
friggin' faggots and lesbians that our whole damned world has gone to hell
in a handbasket.

The younger women of today are a different breed and don't want to be
seen as "getting something for nothing." (which might imply, at least
to some, that they are less able or intelligent)

OK, so wait a minute. One sentiment you express is that gays have ruined
the institution of marriage. The next, you are saying that "the younger
women of today" (spoken, it seems, as a true male chauvinist asshole, by the
way) have, ummmm, higher standards? Is this the same women who get all
those divorces, screw other womens' husbands, suck their boss'
you-know-whats, etc., as you mentioned above? The very same women who,
today, are so wrapped up in using their bodies and sex to get anything and
anywhere that the workplace has become a disgusting display of seething sex
fashions? Because, I want to make sure we are on the same page...uh, if
that's even possible?

OK, back to reality. You are one piece of work. I am pretty convinced that
it's ridiculous for me to mention here that you are spewing a whole huge
trashcan of idiocy over: A WOMAN TALKING ON HAM RADIO WITH HER HUSBAND AS
CONTROL OPERATOR!!!! For friggin' cryin' out loud, dude, get a chill pill.

I would venture a guess that at least half of under 35 year old women
would never stand for a free ride on their husbands license--choosing
to make a point they "have what it takes." (today's women are much
more competitive)

You friggin' nitwit. FIRST, you'd have to get half of the under-35 year old
women the slightest bit interested IN HAM RADIO and/or AT LEAST, help them
let their wimpy-assed husbands get into it and get a radio. THEN come back
to me and discuss this flood of estrogen on YOUR ham bands, k? Where'd
y'all drag this one up from?

I feel the dropping of CW will open this hobby up to these women.

Love it. Hey, Jim? While you're sitting there laughing hysterically ( :o)
Get a load of this: "these" women.

Even if they are only dating a guy which is in amateur radio, it may
be enough to prompt them into studying and grabbing a license of their
own--especially if the boyfriend is smart enough to set up a
competitive spirit and invoke the challenge. grin

John

Oh my good Lord. If you were sitting across the table from me, I'd have to
see your--uh, Dee, please close your eyes, oh wait, I can put it this way:
see your "thing." How tiny is that thing? You are speaking of
strong-willed, competive, and--I'll inject here--independent women, of whom
it is obvious you have absolutely NO EXPERIENCE. Because THIS
strong-willed, competitve, independent woman, would shrivel your mighty
little thing up in half-a second and throw you back out to the curb. By the
way, if the women you have been around need your permission, or your
guidance, to get competitive and have the challenge "invoked," you need to
get out of that closet you're in.

Oh my gawsh...now, I am going to go back to normal and get ready for the

Well now we will see if the Techs are paying attention. If they
are, we
should (but I bet we won't) see a major increase in people taking

over the next several months as the FCC should have this wrapped up
before
their CSCEs expire.

And now we'll see how many people have been "kept out by the Morse

Of course we'll need to monitor over several years to see if their

trend. A few months won't tell us a thing.

I am a TechPlus who never upgraded to General, or any other class.
There
are some considerations that may set me apart from the broad (no pun
intended) population of the ARS:

I am a female
I have a husband who is a General Class (i.e., not sure how many
licensees
are spouses to each other)--and I could, technically, get on HF
General
Class freqs any time I wanted
I enjoy simple ragchewing and emergency communications at a local
level WHEN
I am even "hooked up"
I enjoy the "quiet" mode of communicating--HF makes way too much
noise

There's probably some other differentiating items, and there may be
no
correlation at all.

The point, I think, Kim, was that there was, once upon a time, a
suggestion to allow the spouse to operate a "unit" of an Amateur Radio
station just like CB or GMRS...

And ultimately that's what the patitioner was told...Get a GMRS
license!

I expected as much, a women libber who isn't a libber at all.

Rather a spoiled female brat which wants all the perks of being female
and none of the responsibility.

And, you are right, gays marrying makes a mockery out of marriage. Two
butt buddies (or two lesbian lick masters) are ridiculous and should
be give mental health to repair their suffering mental conditions...

You wouldn't know a real female if she ran up and bit ya on yer bum.
Already you are whinning because your tricks ain't going to work here.

Screw off, you are just a new age wacko and they are a dime a dozen!
You are too used to people kissing yer bum to be politically correct,
ain't gonna happen here--I have too much respect for myself.

If you want to stay focused on ham issues good. If you want to argue
being politically correct or I have to suffer your opinions and
views--chuck it girl!
