Why would you expect trunking and digital? It's not a scanner.

I didn't say it was a scanner. Everyone knows Icom can't build a
scanner...their scan is way to slow.

That right. Icom, by their own admissions, make high end receivers. They
have no interest in competing with Uniden and Radio Shack.

Is the scan rate the only thing that determines if it is a scanner or a
receiver?
It does scan but slowly.

No ... a "communications receiver" generally has a wider frequency
coverage than a scanner. It may also have more modes of recption than just
FM.

Scanning is just an added feature, not the prime mode of recption as in a
scanner.

My Yaesu VR-500 will receive signals in the VHF and UHF TV band. Along
with TV sound (wide FM) many wireless mics are scattered in those freqs.
Also it will receive broadcast AM & FM stations, and shortwave stations. A
far cry from a 'normal' scanner.

I have a handheld scanner with continous coverage from 100khz to
2.060Ghz with modes NFM, WFM, AM and SSB known as 'Trident TR-2400' and
sold under other brand other names such as 'Albrecht AE300'(wich is
mine). And I bet this IS a 'normal' scanner. It scans with 24 steps/sec
with preprogrammed or selfprogrammed stepwidth of 1-999khz from every
frequency you want it to start.
On the other hand the ICOM PCR-1000 -wich has very good scanning
capabilities- is named a 'communications receiver' by ICOM.
So where to make a dividing line....? :-) It's just the way _you_ use it.
