Default Intermod with the BC785D

When I connect my BC785 to an external mobil antenna, the intermod
will come through on many channels. I live in So. Calif and it is
mainly in the metopolitan cities such as downtown LA and the San
Fernando Valley where I work. I suspect that Bearcat puts too much
gain in the front end. Even putting the attenuator in does not help.
Any solutions other than just using the small antenna that came with
it?
