The big difference between the 5 and 6 is the CPU.
The 2006 uses a faster CPU for quicker scan times
26cps vs. 13cps, if I recall correctly.
Aside from an extra bilateral switch in the 2006's
squelch circuit, both are identical.
Later versions of the 2006 use a light switch instead of
a dimmer to conserve the EL panel's life.

Both my 2005s scan at over 20cps - but I did cut the diode which slows
down the scan speed.

It was a long time ago so I had to look it up and found I did not cut a
diode but installed one. However the cellular enable required cutting a
diode so:
I removed D-502 to enable cellular, and
used it as D-501 to increase scan speed.

Don't cut or remove D-503 since that will decrease the scan speed.
