That's because it lacks alphanumeric's.

a 1000 channel model would drive me nutz i think.

A 1000 channel scanner would have alphanumeric's for each channel.

what do ppl do with all of them?

We put in al the local frequencies.

is there some ulterior (wink-wink, nudge-nudge...) purpose to it all
such as entering all the new cordless phone freqs or something along
that line?

Nope. Just all the local channels. I don't live in a large city, I'm
between San Jose and San Francisco, but I could easily fill 1000
channels.
