Hi,
I just bought a radio scanner (radioshack pro-83) and want to listen to
airband frequencies, however, I cannot find any on the airband. I tried
doing the scan, and even tuning to specific ones, like Boston ATC and
whatnot, but cannot hear anything.

Other frequencies, such as Police/Fire I hear just fine. I am
approximately 10 miles away from a major airport.

Am I doing something wrong, or I really have to be close to the airport
to hear them on the scanner?

Thanks.

Kind regards,
george

Well your first problem is it's a Radio **** I mean Shack "Compact
Handheld Scanner" and your 10 miles away from the airport.. If you where
1 mile away it might, I say might work!! The antenna on that "Compact
Handheld Scanner" is junk. You need a real antenn pluged into it.. A
better bet for what you want to do would have been the Pro-2052 heck
Radio **** only wants $149.99 for it.

20-432

or a Uniden BC895XLT or any base or moble scanner with a real antenna,
any real antenna... That crapy rubber ducky thingy on that "Compact
Handheld Scanner" is just there for looks, you want to hear the airport
click the link

20-043

mount it 20 feet above your home.

It's a Bearcat BC92XLT, manufactured by Uniden and repackaged for RS.

It's decent for a $69 scanner.
I like mine.

$69.00 the Radio **** I mean Shack web page show it at $119.95

PRO-83 Compact Handheld Scanner with Signal Stalker and Skywarn Button

$119.99 Brand: RadioShack
Catalog #: 20-501 Model: PRO-83

"Skywarn Button" a button to warn you if the sky is falling :-)

It still needs an antenna 20' above the roof of the house to hear an
Airport 10 miles away.

Really don't need the name of the airport if he's 10 miles away and using a
hand held he is not going to hear anythang!!! He need to put an antenna up
on da roof...and here you go the name and frequ's of every airport on the
world :-)

Correction - He may or may not hear any ground communications at 10 mile
range with stock antenna - He most certainly should hear the aircraft side
though.

My 83 was deaf in the airband until I switched from the stock antenna to a
Diamond RH77CA.

The Diamond RH77CA is an excellent scanner antenna, much better than the
short stock duckie of the Pro-83. I just picked up the RH77CA for my 83 and
lo and behold, it "hears" much better now on all frequencies. I got the
antenna at Universal Radio. I would suggest that Pred02 pick up one of these
as it will probably make a noticeable difference in reception.

Day after Thanksgiving day sale. It was on sale for $69.00

I live 14.73 miles from our airport, with the Diamond RH77CA on my Pro-83 I
can hear the Tower, Approach and Departure as clear as day.

If he wants to put "an antenna 20' above the roof" I'm sure he could hear
the Airport, but I don't think it's necessary.

I really like this antenna. I purchased 3 of them from Universal Radio. I
originally bought one for my VR500, thought I lost the first RH77CA so I
ordered two more. Found the first one under the seat of my car after the
other two arrived, so I have now replaced the stock antennas on 3 of my
radios.

It really brings the bands to life, even HF. Well definitely better in HF
than the stock antennas are.

jamoran August 28th 05 09:43 PM

what you can receive is a function of how much power the target
transmits with. I am not far from KPHX airport but some frequencies I
can receive easier than others.....I would bet that they transmit with
different power outputs... even when I am at the field, some frequencies
are louder than others...

the best place for plane spotting and airport scnner listening at KPHX
is on the roof of either the terminal-3 or terminal-4 garage.

the tower is right next to terminal-3 and they are building a new tower
and tracon facility just east of termina-3
