said in alt.radio.scanner: IMO the best digital scanner at the moment is the Uniden BCD396T. But I'd wait until September 30 to make any final decision. |

"Anonymous Poster" wrote in message news:HLWWe.23901$sx2.14137@fed1read02... What happens 30 September? They are announcing a new Uniden scanner. Which won't be available for 3-5 months. Then will require several upgrades, and maybe even ship the unit back to the factory for something they forgot or left out. Buy a Pro-96 for digital scanning. It's available and it works great. And none have had the letters and numbers wear off like the brand new BCD396. AL |

Or have ever opened on a fire tone-out. Or have free software to program them. Or can be remotely read or controlled. And still costs as much as (or a little more than, depending on where you shop) the BCD396T. And, if any of the firmware (any - CPU, DSP, anything) needs a fix, no matter how minor, the scanner has to be shipped back to Radio Shack - at your expense. And Uniden maintains a presence on the Yahoo groups and the fora - Radio Shack and, more importantly, GRE, is nowhere to be seen. You want something changed? Write it down and burn the paper - maybe the gods will be kind. Uniden doesn't just listen to us - they participate in discussions, and modify the firmware due to users' suggestions and desires - as witness the fire tone-out mod in the latest firmware. So, Al, tell us - when's the last time you were perfect? You still haven't answered that one. |

"Al Klein" Yep, I agree with Al. Plus, with Radio Shack stuff Everything is an extra; wall warts; cables; software and so on. Batteries. If you can get the scanner out of the plastic prison they pack it in; it still won't work unless you spend 60 - 70 dollars more for the mandatory accessories. Jim |
