Going cross country at the end of September. Radio will probably be a
degen DE1103. I don't want to risk any of the more expensive RX. I need some ideas of practicle antennas to bring along. Practicle = Low cost and preferable homebrew. Will be looking for MW and 160m & 75m am. 73 NEO |

I bought the AM loop antenna on Ebay from this seller and I'm happy with the performance. "N9NEO" wrote in message ups.com... Going cross country at the end of September. 100' tape measure. clip the belt attatchment to the whip antenna and pull
out as much as needed to extend the length. portable and practicle. "N9NEO" wrote in message ups.com... Going cross country at the end of September. Radio will probably be a degen DE1103. Thanks for the input.
Looks like antenna compliment will include the small Kaito active loop I got with the radio, a roll of 16 gauge wire and a wrist rocket with plenty of sinkers, and a homebrew 4' tuned loop that I can hopefully resonate on 75m & MW too. I'm looking at some Loop plans now. Maybe a Hula Loop. 73 NEO Vincent Everett wrote: 100' tape measure. clip the belt attatchment to the whip antenna and pull out as much as needed to extend the length. portable and practicle. No slinkeys no tape measure.
I built a loop antenna today out of a 9" cardboard tube like a sonotube. 24 turns of 16gauge wire and rang it with a 20-450pf variable I had kicking around. Awsum signals. I'm going to continue experimenting and put together a larger like 3 foot diameter loop and maybe build in a preamp and a band switch. It's got to be done by the end of the month for cross-country AM DXpedition. That and my Kaito loop and a spool of wire should keep me with some good signals. 73 NEO |

![]() RHF wrote: N9NEO - 9" Diameter ? -or- 9" Circumference ? ~ RHF Was hoping you would show up. That 9" was the diameter. I stuck my portable inside and worked real well and tuning wasn't so critical. If you've got any pointers on the next design then I'm all ears - maybe a slightly larger diameter. I'm thinking just getting out of he city will be a big plus. I'm going totally primitive with the campsites - no electricity, so hope it should be very quiet. My Degen radio doesn't use the built in preamps when an external antenna is plugged in. Not having any experience with larger loops I really have no idea what I'm going to need to interface with the radio. I would like to do 75m with the loop, and would prefer a hard wire on broadcast band so I don't have to stick my radio in the toob. I should be able to modify the Degen no prob if need to. I think I should be able to get by with a simple mpf102 jfet amp. I think the input Z of a 3904 transistor is too low to do me any good. I don't think I need to pay attention to balance on the loop if I just link couple a turn close to the main loop and feed into a single end amp. But I am out of my element when it comes to this kind of electronics. My twisted terminated folded dipole you helped with is doing a nice job up in the attic. Maybe a long wire will go up across the river in the way back this fall. 73 NEO |
