Good AM Medium Wave Receivers?

Those older model AM car radios from back in the 1950's and 1960's,I
remember they were good for AM Dxing.I once read an article about using
AM radios in homes.Something about finding or making a metal box for the
radio's cabinet.
I have an old 1950 or 1951 Ford car tube type radio sitting on a shelf
in my shed in my back yard and I own some more older car radios
too,mostly transistor car radios.
Some of those older foreign car radios are pretty good too.

I've found my 'Eton FR-200' (AM/FM/SW wind-up radio) to be very good at
night-time MW DXing, the band is full of stations from at least as far away
as Germany (my QTH is in the centre of England).

It may be sold as the 'Grundig FR-200' in the USA, and the original
manufacturer seems to be Tecsun, model 'Green-88'.

Hi,
I have an old GE Superradio that works well. I purchased a CCPlus
radio that has a problem with LED readout I am told is common.
Any AM radios currently in production that are good DX machines?
Thank you.

If iboc winds up being on full time, day and night,,,, what is the use in
buying a good DX Radio anyway? About four or five years ago,I bought a
radio at Sears. The radio is Stereo (but not real quality stereo,if you
know what I mean?) AM FM with a CD Player on top of the radio and two
seperate speakers.I have the radio put up somewhere now and as usual,I
would have to move a lot of my junk out of the way to even get at the
radio. It is a grey color radio and I think the brand name is something
like Sound (whatever it is,similar to those GPX radios. Some of those off
the wall brand name radios are really good at DXing AM stations) I paid
about $30.00 for the radio.I am pretty amazed at how well it picks up
long distance AM stations.

With my RS model 12-898 AM/FM PLL, I can pick up 1040 WHO, 870 WWL, and
stations in Canada from Maryland, up to 1,000 miles - same as the
Grundig S350. Actually, I found the wide/narrow filter on the S350
annoying, as it only muffled the sound. The S350's RF Gain switch could
always be left in the max position, so it served the same purpose as
the DX/LOC switch on my RS radio. Too much hype ! :)

IMO the Drake R7A beats the R8 series for LW/MW DX. Unfortunately it
lacks a real synchronous detector, which is what makes the R8 such a
good DX machine.

I would also add the Ten-Tec RX340 to the list. It is awesome on LW/MW.

On the cheap, set up an old Clarion car radio in my 40 x 60 ft metal
quonset. An odd combination of wire dangling about from antenna input
and cross between ant and gnd to the metal shell of the quonset (by
accident) produced stunning reception performance. Equal to and at
times better than any of my $$ receivers (JRC, older Grundig, Pana).

Seems to me that most of those old car radios had a 262 KC I.F. strip for
better sensitivity & selectivity....................GC
