GE Superadio III vs. Grundig S350
Forget the Analog Tunning and cost on the SR III or the LCD display and
short wave on the Grundig, Simply put, Which of these radios performs better on AM? Hopefully someone here has had both of these radios to compare. Thanks. |

Both radios have serious quality-control problems - they both are very cheap construction, and from experience, the S350 is just total junk. The S350 is analog tuned and still drifts despite a kludged lock mechanism, cheap switches, plastic speaker grill, smelly imitation leather handle, low-resolution display, and is no better a DX'er than my better-quality Radio Shack $25 PLL AM/FM radio. All this talk about "DX machines" is just hype. I'll never buy an analog-tuned radio again ! |

It's no contest.Analog tuning is always best.

I would strongly suggest you check out the reviews for these radios on eham.net and Amazon.com - the SRIII's switches fall off and the S350 has severe tuning backlash. I opened up the back of the S350, before returning it to RS (it was not sealed) and I could not believe that this mostly-hollow piece-of-**** was made by Grundig - but now, Grundigs are made in China, not Germany. Consumer beware ! |

Consumer beware ! But they aren't made by Grundig. "Grundig" is now a name rented out to companies that want to use it. So those "Grundig" radios sold in North America are put out by some other company, who pay for the rights to use the name. Where the radios are made is fairly irrelevant, where it's designed is far more important. Michael |

Hopefully someone here has had both of these radios to compare. Thanks. """""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" """"""""""""""""""""""" I have had both of these radios and kept the S350 for its portability and gave the GEIII away because for some unknown reason I didn't like it. I also have a GE II which I do like. If I could only have one for AM listening, I would choose a GE II. If my choice was between a GEIII and the drifty 350 I would pick the 350. They both seemed to have the same sensitivity on AM, more or less, but the sound quality is better with the GE. The GE is rather a pain to cart around, being big and heavy, and I find the 350 quite convenient in that respect. The battery drain on the GE is very low but it plugs in to the AC. Actually, I took no pleasure in the GEIII but I have found the 350 to be trouble-free and handy, but I still use the GEII quite often. If you can find a good GEII on ebay or some such, that is the one I would pick. Actually, I hated the GEIII : it had a sort of clockwork orange quality about it that drove me nuts. |

Get an old tube type home or car radio and you will be much better off.

GE Superadio III vs. Grundig S350
The 350 has better selectivity, to take out a strong station nearby in
frequency. I'd not use either one for DX, rather using a MW loop with another radio, like the 7600G, to get the daytime distance. The GE seems more trouble free; the 350 has SW bands and tells you what frequency you're tuned to. I dunno, either radio leaves you room to move up. I think the GE is cheaper, which maybe would be a big factor in satisfaction ; and more volume available. The 350 is marginal outdoors volumewise. I suggest a MW loop as a first purchase and use it with whatever radio you have already. (MW loop helps more the less sensitive your radio ; almost not mattering with either of these radios, though helping a little. Only matters in the daytime; at night, signals are strong enough to hear already. Thousands of them.) -- Ron Hardin On the internet, nobody knows you're a jerk. |

And at night, other issues come into play, like being able to receive weak signals adjacent to stronger signals, and of course, fading. People have mentioned in the past, I think rightfully, that not enough people tune up and down the band with any old radio. So they assume they need something good to receive distant stations, and they go out and buy something (often the GE Superradio) before getting a handle on what it's like with whatever radios they have at home. I've never used the GE radio, but I have used the Grundig S350 and now the S350DL. which is marketed by Eton, but still carries the Grundig name. I found a difference in both sound and AM sensitivity between the two, Both are better in the S350DL, with the sound being the biggest difference. For the money ($99 at a local Radio Shack) I have no complaints. |

That is exactly what happened to me - after I got my S350, I tried my little RS PLL radio and my PLL car radio and was able to get exactly the same stations - I guess, I fell for the S350's pretty face and all the hype. I'de love to be able to check out the new RS 12-150, but it is not available in stores in Maryland, yet. But, if AM nighttime IBOC gets approved, all these are moot points ! Whoa... haven't seen this. Here's the link: http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...tId=2472950&cp Sure would like to try one of these. Rich |

It is sitting on the floor over there behind my antique pump organ (shove your puns up your pootchie,I don't play that crap unless you are one of me nasty takin wimmins) that my two tv sets are sittin on and it gathering dust, dust, and more dust. cuhulin |

GE Superadio III vs. Grundig S350
I just purchased the Radio Shack model that Rich included the link for,
but unfortunately, this is the first radio that I've bought to try and pull in distant AM stations. Are there any kind of performance tests that I can do to check the quality of this radio? Like I said, I haven't used any of the other popular models in order to make a comparison. GE Superadio III vs. Grundig S350
The overall build appears solid although I wish it had a handle rather
than the carrying strap. I've carried it from the garage to my shed a couple times, and I would have appreciated a handle. The metal braces on the front feel pretty solid, but I wouldn't be surprised if they are more ornamental than functional -- only time will tell, I guess. The selector buttons for the AM/FM/WX setting and for the WIDE/NORMAL setting have a cheap feel to them. The Treble and Bass knobs are plastic. The other knobs and controls appear reliable, however. Apart from concerns about the selector buttons, my only other complaint is that there is no owner's manual or specs. I was curious about the size and type of AM antenna (and the store employee was clueless), but there's no specs anywhere on the radio, box or the lone piece of paper that was in the box. That kind of makes me afraid of the quality. I haven't experimented with the presets or memory yet. The sound is nice for the stations that I've pulled in ... about 550 miles away. I have really limited knowledge about these radios compared to the other folks that I've seen post messages. So please take any of my comments with a grain of salt! Any other info that folks can share would be greatly appreciated! Thanx. Jim On Nov 5, 7:51 pm, "Dorpmuller" wrote: wrote in ooglegroups.com... Pretty solid or does it look/feel chintzy? Rich Thanks for your review, but this radio must be a re-packaged S350, or the old "high-performance" radio RS used to sell. Being only one pound for such a large radio, and having cheap switches, sounds just like the S350. I am sure that the metal braces are just ornamental, too. The S350's "metal" plate on the front, just turns out to plastic, as its speaker grill. The RS radio looks nice, but don't drop it ! |
