During Sep - Oct 2006:

0400 UTC: 7120 khz
2200 UTC: 13765 khz
0030 UTC: 15280 khz

My weblog (url in signature) often includes my shortwave reception reports. If you'd like more info on frequencies available in California, drop by and search for articles titled "shortwave summary".

Being an SWL since the early 1960's the concept of paying to listen to
the BBC is anathema to me. None the less the BBC have become much less
frequent contributors to the North American SW bands. A local AM (MW)
station here in Santa Barbara features many hours daily of the BBC
satellite feed. KZSB 1290 AM. They only output about 250 watts but I
have heard them as far south as Oxnard.

(Seattle should be close enough.)

Morning 12095 (North Africa)
Afternoon 15400 (Africa track)
Late Afternoon, 15285, maybe 15360 (East/South East Aisa)
Evening 6005, 7120, 7160 (Africa)

Morning 9740, 6195, 5975, 3915 (East/South East Aisa)

Probably the best, this time of year are 9740 and 6195 around
7-9 AM PST.

Go to the web site http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice for the
transmission schedules for each area. I think the quickest way
is to take the link, (under the schedules "enter your city" box),
labeled "Shortwave Update".

Or try 550 kHz, KOAC Corvallis Oregon which broadcasts the
BBC PRI feed from 9 PM to 3 AM PST.

How many months, at 15 per, does it take to equal a decent radio?

Satellite receivers are fifty bucks and the reception is darn near
perfect all the time. Lets one concentrate on the content...

I haven't been in CA in some years but one of the best frequencies was
9740 kHz in the morning from Singapore.

Of course, BBCWS is available by internet streaming but IMHO once you
get into internet streaming you may decide to go with another BBC
stream which has more of the programs you like.

Not only are the domestic over-the-air stations available on streams
but so are the satellite radio stations. BBC7, for example, runs
repeats of ancient Radio4 dramas, comedy and panel shows including
Goon shows from the '50's. There is also audio on demand.

I don't know how this affects the original poster. but the BBC, once the
one of two stations you could receive anytime day or night in the U.S.
has reduced it's broadcasts to North America. The other was Radio
Moscow. :-)

The radio feeds are as you said are available over the Internet and via
satellite, but I think the real reason is money. Many NPR stations pay
them for the rights to rebroadcast BBC news.

While they are unable to charge end users for their programs (BBC prime
is the exception), if you listen to them on NPR, you will probably donate
to that station and that will encourage them to buy the BBC programing.

Personaly, I'm not very happy with the BBC, to them if you are an Isrishman
who blows up innocent people, you are a terrorist, if you are not Irish,
you are an "activist".

Geoff.

www.devilfinder.com British planted bombs in Northern Ireland

It is true the Brits did plant some (but not all) bombs in Northern
Ireland and England and blamed them on the IRA.
