So I just thought if I could get a great radio with all the elements I want, it would be better. I do have a Sangean in another place and it seems to work fairly well although it sometimes fades on the Honolulu FM stations. Besides, a shortwave sounds like lots of fun. aloha, beans beansatsmithfarms.com farmers of pure kona roast beans to kona to email |

GE SuperRadio III or if you can find a used one SR or SRII (both better). http://www.universal-radio.com/catal...alty/0547.html No shortwave, but very sensitive and good sound. Geoff. -- Geoffrey S. I lived on Maui , 1984-1986 and I did alot of BCBDX along with SWDX.. It's surprising to hear Australlia, NewZealand Japan on BCB........Since you live on a farm, you have lot's of room for long wire antennas ..............It's sad that Radio Tahaiti and Radio Cook islands are gone but cruse through 3.2-3.3 mhz for Paupa New Guinea ........GC |

I want a radio cappable of getting an FM station from 93 miles away (the closest NPR station I have) and I live in a remote rural area with mountains and valleys. I have looked at Sangean, Eton, Tivoli, Boston etc. but I can not make my decision. I am willing to spend up to $200. Can you make me any recommendations? I honestly don't know if I need a short wave even. Sorry. The Boston Acoustics Recepter is the best FM table radio I've seen. http://www.crutchfield.com/S-3sbsWhV...ston+Acoustics |

I honestly don't know if I need a short wave even. Sorry. One reccomendation is to get an old Stereo Tuner or Reciever from the late 1970's early '80, before they went digital. One of the higher end brands like HH Scott, Marantz, Sansui. Before they went to Digital tuning. Around that era, performance mattered and they had low noise FET RF amplifiers and modern ceramic IF filters and detectors. Less alignment needed than an older one but no performance compromises that they made with the digital tuned stuff. Or get a good car radio and a 12 volt power supply. And then get a rooftop antenna. A 6 to 10 element FM band Yagi. Radio Shack had one, and maybe a hardware store out in the fringes could order one for you if they carry Channel Master or one of the other remaining brands. One resource is (former?) electronics magazine columnist Don Lancaster's reprint archive on www.tinaja.com. He did a sequence of columns back about 15 years ago in Radio-Electronics/Electronics Now about his attempts to do what you're trying to do. All sorts of other antenna suggestions.
