Default constrained listening criteria:

i don't want to set up an outdoor antenna
i listen mostly via headphones

which radio do i get?

sony icf-sw07 which comes with the an-2, but VERY pricey little number!
or
eton e1? which is the mac-daddy but i hear it kind of stinks without an
external antenna

or
sony icf-sw7600gr coupled with the expensive aor la-308 antenna (can i
even hook it up?) which would sit on the nightstand (impractical?)

The Sony ICF-SW7600GR is a very good value. It comes with a clip-on,
reel antenna. I'm sure the AOR LA-380 is a fine antenna, but I wouldn't
recommend spending that much money on an antenna that has to be used
indoors. It's also worth noting that some outdoor antennas are very
small, easy to hide, and don't require much in the way of "setting up".
That said, if for some really you really can't go the outdoor antenna
route, I'd recommend either sticking with the reel antenna or buying
one of the Sony AN-LP1 loops on ebay.
