Default Building a Ready-Made "GreerTech" Coax Cable [Shielded] Loop Antenna with Multi-Heads

The basic design of the "GreerTech" Coax Cable [Shielded]
Loop Antenna is good and very practical.

Building a Ready-Made "GreerTech" Coax Cable
[Shielded] Loop Antenna with Multi-Heads.

So here is another take on Building the "Quiet"
Shortwave Listening (SWL) Antenna :

1 - An XX Foot Round RG8 Coax Cable Loop Antenna

2- The Loop Antenna Element is located in side the
Radio Shack on the Wall with short X Foot Feed-in-Line
to the Radio.

3 - This is an Antenna Project using Ready-Made-Parts
to simplify the build and allow for Multi-Loop Heads.

The Heart {Center} of this design is a single UHF "T" Adapter
with Three (3) Female SSO-239 Jack-Ends as the Central
Connection-Point for the Cax Cables.

The Coax Cable Loop Antenna Elements and Feed-in-Line.
I recommend using RG8 Coax Cable throughout for many
reasons. Pre-Assembled Coax Cable with PL-259 Plugs
already installed will work very well.

Buy One Each : 3-Foot, 6-Foot, 9-Foot, 12-Foot and 18-Foot
Coax Cables.
Use the 3-Foot and 6-Foot Coax Cables as your Feed-in-Lines
Use the 9-Foot, 12-Foot and 18-Foot Coax Cables for the
Loop Antenna Elements.

Preparing {Building} the Loop Antenna Elements
from the Coax Cables :
* Fine and Mark the Center-Point of each of the Coax Cables.
* Place a piece of Masking Tape around the Coax Cable
on both side of the Center-Point about a a Half-Inch from
out from the Center-Point.
* Very Carefully take an Exaxto Knife or other small sharp
knife and cut around the Coax Cable at the Edge of the
Masking Tape just deep enough to reach the Coax's Outer
Shielding. Then Cut a single 1" Longitudinal cut between
the two circular cuts.
* Carefully Peel-Off the Outer Insulation Cover from the
Coax Cable.
* Next use a sharp Scissors to Trim the Outer Shield
Wires from the Coax Cable being sure not to damage
the Inner Insulation of the Coax Cable.
* Remove the Masking Tape and re-install the piece of
Outer Insulation that was just removed.
* Use an 8-9 Inch piece of Black Plastic Electrical Tape
to Secure the replaced piece of Outer Insulation Cover
and to cover the Coax Cable about an Inch on both sides;
and repeat with 1-2 more pieces of Electrical Tape.

Assembling the Loop Antenna
* Connect a Feed-in-Line to the Center-Bottom Connector
of the "T" Adapter.
* Connect a Loop Element to the Two Side Connectors
of the "T" Adapter.
* Hang {Rig} the Loop Element on the Wall as either a :
Round Circle, sort of round Octagon, Square or Diamond.
Connect the other end of the Feed-in-Line to the Radio's
Antenna Input; Antenna Switch-Box or Pre-Selector.

The Larger 18-Foot Coax Cable Loop Antenna Element
should cover the Tropical Bands from 2 MHz to 5 MHz.
- - - Forms a Circle about 6-Feet Round.

The Middle-Size 12 Foot Coax Cable Loop Antenna
Element should cover the 60M to 25M Shortwave
Bands from 5 MHz to 12 MHz.
- - - Forms a Circle about 4-Feet Round.

The Smaller 9 Foot Coax Cable Loop Antenna Element
should cover the 25M to 11M Shortwave Bands from
12 MHz to 26 MHz.
- - - Forms a Circle about 3-Feet Round.

NOTE ON SIZING: The Loop Antenna Elements should
be 'cut' "Sized" to roughly One Tenth of a Wave Length
of the (1/10WL) of the Target Shortwave Band :
* Twenty-Five Feet (25 Ft) roughly the 120 Meter SW Band
* Twenty Feet (20 Ft) roughly the 90 Meter SW Band
* Fifteen Feet (15 Ft) roughly the 75 Meter SW Band
* Twelve Feet (12 Ft) roughly the 60 Meter SW Band
* Nine Feet (9 Ft) roughly the 41 Meter SW Band
* Six Feet (6 Ft) roughly the 31 Meter SW Band
* Five Feet (5 Ft) roughly the 25 Meter SW Band
* Four Feet (4 Ft) roughly the 19 Meter SW Band
* Three Feet (3 Ft) roughly the 13 Meter SW Band
The above Lengths and SW Bands are 'based' on the low
cost common {RadioShack} type RG8 Coax Cable with
a Velocity Factor of 0.66.
NOTE: If you use an improved RG8-U/X Coax Cable
that has a Velocity Factor of 0.78 to 0.84 : Then every
thing would shift down one SW Band 120M90M,
90M75M, 75M60M, ETC.

But in-fact for "Receive Only" One Loop Antenna Element
will cover several Shortwave Bands usually at least two
up and two down for the 'cut' Band when used with a
Pre-Selector like the MFJ-1040 Indoor Active Antenna.

So I switched over to another of my Shortwave Listening
(SWL) Antennas a 13 Foot Round RG8 Coax Cable Loop
Antenna not using Radio's Pre-Amps "Off". The Loop
Antenna Element is located in side the Radio Shack
on the Wall with 5 Foot Feed-in-Line to the Radio.
.
IF - You are in a Noisy Urban Area and especially
IF - You Live in an Apartment or are Condo Owner
THEN - Consider Building and Using a Coax Cable
Loop Antenna made from RG8 Size Coax Cable.
NOTE - If you have a Radio/Receiver that has a
built-in Pre-Amp they work even better or use one
with a Tune-Able Pre-Selector like an MFJ-1020

So I switched over to another of my Shortwave Listening
(SWL) Antennas a 13 Foot Round RG8 Coax Cable Loop
Antenna not using Radio's Pre-Amps "Off". The Loop
Antenna Element is located in side the Radio Shack
on the Wall with 5 Foot Feed-in-Line to the Radio.

IF - You are in a Noisy Urban Area and especially
IF - You Live in an Apartment or are Condo Owner
THEN - Consider Building and Using a Coax Cable
Loop Antenna made from RG8 Size Coax Cable.
NOTE - If you have a Radio/Receiver that has a
built-in Pre-Amp they work even better or use one
with a Tune-Able Pre-Selector like an MFJ-1020

Thanks a bunch for the info. I'm not in a position to build any
antennas at the moment but when I am I'll try out a SW loop or two.
I love my MW loops. I'm packing up the old New England QTH and
heading west. Once the dust settles I'll be building many more
antennas.

So here is another take on Building the "Quiet"
Shortwave Listening (SWL) Antenna :


1 - An XX Foot Round RG8 Coax Cable Loop Antenna


2- The Loop Antenna Element is located in side the
Radio Shack on the Wall with short X Foot Feed-in-Line
to the Radio.

3 - This is an Antenna Project using Ready-Made-Parts
to simplify the build and allow for Multi-Loop Heads.

The Heart {Center} of this design is a single UHF "T" Adapter
with Three (3) Female SSO-239 Jack-Ends as the Central
Connection-Point for the Cax Cables.http://www.universal-radio.com/catal.../so2adapt.html

The Coax Cable Loop Antenna Elements and Feed-in-Line.
I recommend using RG8 Coax Cable throughout for many
reasons. Pre-Assembled Coax Cable with PL-259 Plugs
already installed will work very well.http://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/cable/cable.html
Buy One Each : 3-Foot, 6-Foot, 9-Foot, 12-Foot and 18-Foot
Coax Cables.
Use the 3-Foot and 6-Foot Coax Cables as your Feed-in-Lines
Use the 9-Foot, 12-Foot and 18-Foot Coax Cables for the
Loop Antenna Elements.


Preparing {Building} the Loop Antenna Elements
from the Coax Cables :
* Fine and Mark the Center-Point of each of the Coax Cables.
* Place a piece of Masking Tape around the Coax Cable
on both side of the Center-Point about a a Half-Inch from
out from the Center-Point.
* Very Carefully take an Exaxto Knife or other small sharp
knife and cut around the Coax Cable at the Edge of the
Masking Tape just deep enough to reach the Coax's Outer
Shielding. Then Cut a single 1" Longitudinal cut between
the two circular cuts.
* Carefully Peel-Off the Outer Insulation Cover from the
Coax Cable.
* Next use a sharp Scissors to Trim the Outer Shield
Wires from the Coax Cable being sure not to damage
the Inner Insulation of the Coax Cable.
* Remove the Masking Tape and re-install the piece of
Outer Insulation that was just removed.
* Use an 8-9 Inch piece of Black Plastic Electrical Tape
to Secure the replaced piece of Outer Insulation Cover
and to cover the Coax Cable about an Inch on both sides;
and repeat with 1-2 more pieces of Electrical Tape.


Assembling the Loop Antenna
* Connect a Feed-in-Line to the Center-Bottom Connector
of the "T" Adapter.
* Connect a Loop Element to the Two Side Connectors
of the "T" Adapter.
* Hang {Rig} the Loop Element on the Wall as either a :
Round Circle, sort of round Octagon, Square or Diamond.
Connect the other end of the Feed-in-Line to the Radio's
Antenna Input; Antenna Switch-Box or Pre-Selector.


The Larger 18-Foot Coax Cable Loop Antenna Element
should cover the Tropical Bands from 2 MHz to 5 MHz.
- - - Forms a Circle about 6-Feet Round.


The Middle-Size 12 Foot Coax Cable Loop Antenna
Element should cover the 60M to 25M Shortwave
Bands from 5 MHz to 12 MHz.
- - - Forms a Circle about 4-Feet Round.


The Smaller 9 Foot Coax Cable Loop Antenna Element
should cover the 25M to 11M Shortwave Bands from
12 MHz to 26 MHz.
- - - Forms a Circle about 3-Feet Round.

NOTE ON SIZING: The Loop Antenna Elements should
be 'cut' "Sized" to roughly One Tenth of a Wave Length
of the (1/10WL) of the Target Shortwave Band :
* Twenty-Five Feet (25 Ft) roughly the 120 Meter SW Band
* Twenty Feet (20 Ft) roughly the 90 Meter SW Band
* Fifteen Feet (15 Ft) roughly the 75 Meter SW Band
* Twelve Feet (12 Ft) roughly the 60 Meter SW Band
* Nine Feet (9 Ft) roughly the 41 Meter SW Band
* Six Feet (6 Ft) roughly the 31 Meter SW Band
* Five Feet (5 Ft) roughly the 25 Meter SW Band
* Four Feet (4 Ft) roughly the 19 Meter SW Band
* Three Feet (3 Ft) roughly the 13 Meter SW Band
The above Lengths and SW Bands are 'based' on the low
cost common {RadioShack} type RG8 Coax Cable with
a Velocity Factor of 0.66.
NOTE: If you use an improved RG8-U/X Coax Cable
that has a Velocity Factor of 0.78 to 0.84 : Then every
thing would shift down one SW Band 120M90M,
90M75M, 75M60M, ETC.


But in-fact for "Receive Only" One Loop Antenna Element
will cover several Shortwave Bands usually at least two
up and two down for the 'cut' Band when used with a
Pre-Selector like the MFJ-1040 Indoor Active Antenna.

P.S. I suppose the real reason that I'm not in a position to build any
more antennas is because I've Got the Crystalonics fets for the Amrad
whip waiting for me in Rochester and my good friend Dick - WA2IKC is
building me one of those PA0RDT antennas because I've been dragging my
feet on that one.
