Default For Shortwave Listeners (SWLs) : Which is Better to Use ? a FM Folded Dipole Antenna ? -or- a Whip Antenna ?

"Reflex Snooper" Shortwave Antenna
also does Scanner plus FM Ham too !
http://cgi.ebay.com/_W0QQitemZ270149136286

Basically a Ready-Made FM Folded Dipole Antenna
with a BNC Connector attached to hook-up your
Handy-Radio or Scanner. And -IF- they cover the
Shortwave Bands too - Oh well you have an Antenna
that is better then a Rubber Ducky type.

OK - SO THIS GOT ME TO THINKING . . .

The basic Ready-Made FM Folded Dipole Antenna
has an impedance of 300 Ohms and using a BNC
or PL-259 to connect to a Radio-Receiver's LO-Z
{50 Ohm} external Antenna Input is a 'mismatch'.

However, using a Ready-Made FM Folded Dipole
Antenna connected to the Radio-Receiver's HI-Z
{500 Ohm} external Antenna Input is a Match ! )
http://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/mwant/3239.html

Now the common Ready-Made FM Folded Dipole
Antenna usually has an 8-Foot Balance feed-in-line
with a 6-Foot Folded Dipole {Tip-to-Tip}. This is a
Horizontal Antenna Element with 12-Feet of Wire
in it but effectively on the Shortwave Frequencies
is just a thick 6-Foot Wire. The 8-Foot feed-in-line
allows the Antenna Element to be placed away from
the Radio : On-the-Wall or Across-a-Window for
better reception.

Contrast this to a Back-of-the-Radio Whip Antenna
using a PL259 Plug connected to the Radio's LO-Z
Antenna Input or a Built-in Whip Antenna. These
are usually about 3-5 Feet long; and rigged straight
up Vertically. Plus they are very close to the Radio.

Read - Building a Telescoping "Whip" Antenna
for the Back of your Shortwave Receiver
http://groups.google.com/group/rec.r...3079f01b0070c6

IMHO - As an Emergency {Back-Up} Antenna the
Ready-Made FM Folded Dipole Antenna is the better
'choice' then the Back-of-the-Radio Whip Antenna
for the Shortwave Radio Listener (SWL'er).

NOTE - If you must use a Whip Antenna on the back of
a Radio then think about using a "Miracle Whip" Antenna
that is designed to use there and can be Tuned to the
general operating frequency being listened to.
