Making the "Protected" Antenna-to-Radio Connection
RWB,
Making the "Protected" Antenna-to-Radio Connection http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Shortw.../message/14289 At least for 'portable' AM/FM Shortwave Radios that have an External Antenna Connection and using an Out-Side Antenna; the Antenna-to-Radio "GIZMOE" 'Connector' Box seems to work OK and incorporate many of the items that you mentioned. But then the solid state stuff began showing up with fried RF transistors. It was apparent that the neons didn't fire until it was too late - good for hollow state, but not transistors. So I always put a 1/4meg or 1/2 meg resistor across the input for a static bleeder. But in the case of a nearby strike, apparently the emf would surge past the resistor, So back went the NE2 along with the resistor. Maybe it's me, but I don't trust Transorbs or Surgistors. I now put in a lower value resistor, like a 5 or 10K, in series with a coil, tuned to the lowest receiving frequency, and across that an NE2. Maybe it's dumb luck, or maybe it's good practice, but I haven't had any of those radios fail since ... mine included - knock on wood (sound of me rapping my knuckles on my head). I once had a little mini-box on the shelf, which fed my long wire to the shack's switch box. It had 3 switches: antenna shunt, resistor in/out, NE2 in/out. If I was brave enough to disconnect the switch box, and leave the mini-box inline, I could watch the bulb flash - bright and often - under certain weather conditions. More than once I got zapped by handling that antenna connector during a dry snowfall. It's more fun to watch the flashing than to conduct the static with your body. Better yet, it's better to keep the bleeder resistor inline and not play with the little blue sparks. Now, the outdoor balun does all the bleeding - much better arrangement. Okay, jes thought I'd share that. Bob . . .. . again hope this helps - iane ~ RHF {pomkia} .
