That being said, the author of the does not really know how a sync detector works, nor does he understand how it helps to receive a signal. In other words, don't bother with this article. I didn't. FWIW, I have always just zero-beated a BFO on AM weak or noisy signals to improve intelligibility; on receivers with good LO and BFO stability, this works well. In an SSB mode, the product detectors and narrower filters are additional advantages for AM signals. As a simple homebrew retrofit for a synch det. capability, have any readers ever built an injection lock circuit that locks the BFO using limited IF (perhaps best suited to older rigs) or added a phase detector and error amp to drive a varactor on the BFO xtal for newer rigs? I see that there is a not-well-regarded injection lock mod for the r-390a, but I would appreciate hearing about results for other rigs as well. Regards, Michael |
