Seems that the CBC is advancing its agenda to abandon the AM band. Yeah, to FM with its shorter range. Dumb, dumb, dumb. There are eleven FM transmitters in a province roughly 100 miles by 100 miles. Five of them are Class B (50kw/150m) or bigger. Any place in New Brunswick the new Moncton FM transmitter won't reach is already covered by at least one other existing FM transmitter that carries the same program. Really, with this FM move in Moncton, the only place where the CBC is losing coverage is in the United States. Now, I know there will be a bunch of Americans who'll miss the easy access to CBC Radio. (I know I miss 740/Toronto and 940/Montreal, and will not be celebrating when the day comes that 990/Winnipeg moves) But I suppose if I was a Canadian taxpayer, I wouldn't see the provision of a radio service to the United States as being a very high priority for my tax money. The FM transmitter will have a much better signal inside buildings, especially in Moncton's downtown area. |
