"Guy Atkins" wrote: Last week I returned for a couple of nights at Grayland Beach State Park (Washington) for DXing. This was my first DXpedition trip with the new Perseus receiver, and it was a blast to use for active DXing as well as recording of 400 kHz portions of the band. It was also my first time staying in the new(er) yurts at the campground; that was a *great* choice for comfort, particularly in mid-winter at the coast in Washington! Loggings are below, but also see the full report on my blog for more details with photos, Wellbrook Phased Array comparison audio recordings, etc.: www.perseus-sdr.blogspot.com. 73, Guy ----------------------------------------------------- 594 JAPAN JOAK Tokyo, Jan 3 1230 - Fair to good with talk by male in Japanese, but much better signal the next evening. (Atkins-WA) 909 JAPAN JOVX Abashiri (STV), Jan 4 1054 - Japanese talk by man and woman; parallel to 1440 JOWF Sapporo. Time pip at 1100 and possible tones or signature musical notes, but too weak to tell for sure. Mostly fair to good when not in a fade. (Atkins-WA) 918 CHINA CNR2, Jan 3 1228 - Presumed. Very echoey Chinese talk by male and female; signal obviously coming from multiple transmitters. Poor to fair level. (Atkins-WA) 936 JAPAN Unid., Jan 4 1330 - Faint audio in Japanese; JOTR Akita and JONF Miyazaki at 5 kW are the two most likely candidates on the frequency. (Atkins-WA) 963 CHINA CRI, Jan 3 1255 - Russian talk by male, followed by orchestral music and then signature tune and ID in Russian. Nice signal from this regular occupant of 963 kHz! Another ID noted at 1336 while tuning across frequency again; excellent signal. (Atkins-WA) 981 CHINA CNR1, Jan 4 0924 - Presumed; man and woman in Chinese with possible news items. Back up somewhat at 1231. I heard a number of mentions of Malaysia, beginning at 1225. Between 1240 and 1245, I heard snippets of audio that was possibly DEZC Manila, with a female announcer in poss. Tagalog at the same level as Sibu, then fading down. (Atkins-WA) 1098 MARSHALL ISLANDS V7AB Majuro, Jan 3 1315 - Distinctive island music, and talk by woman and man in presumed Marshallese. Fair. (Atkins-WA) 1512 PHILIPPINES DYAB Cebu City, Jan 4 1520 - Deep voiced Tagalog announcer reading news items from around the world. Mentions of Iraq, Russia, South Africa, US presidential candidates, Washington DC, etc. Frequent trumpet and orchestral fanfare made the broadcast sound very 'official'. I was hoping for an ID at 1530, but it coincided with a deep fade. Fair level. (Atkins-WA) 1557 UNIDENTIFIED Unid., Jan 4 1147 - SE Asian language noted briefly, before disappearing into the muck. Who?. (Atkins-WA) 1566 SOUTH KOREA HLAZ Cheju, Jan 3 1621 - Interview or debate program between two women in Chinese. Good to very good signal; unid. music station faintly in background. (Atkins-WA) I find the audio from this radio a little harsh. I don't know how much of this is actually due to the radio itself or has something to do with the audio processing chain in the PC. Instructive in this regard is the link you provided http://www.tadx.mediumwaveradio.org/perseus_audio_clips.html scroll down a bit and you see a section "Audio checks against other receivers". I thought the Racal and the AOR7030 sounded the best. The Perseus comes in last place. I don't know about other people but I had a great deal of trouble making out some of the words in the recordings from the Perseus. There is no reason for this as my RX340 sounds just fine to me with its digital sampling, demodulation, and detection. Your recordings sound more intelligible to me from this radio than the referenced link above for whatever reason but it sounds just as harsh to me. I can't think of a more descriptive way to describe the audio quality from this radio. Harsh is the best I can do. Regarding the coax signal to noise improvements the chokes at either end of the coax makes a great deal of sense. This is standard technique to prevent EMI/RFI on equipment cabling. Earthing the coax shield somewhere in the middle seems slightly unclear to me. I think you would be better off burying the cable in the ground most if not all the cable run. Burying the cable should be much more effective than a single point ground. -- Telamon Ventura, California |
