Default antenna

I just bought my first shortwave radio a grundig G5. what is the best
antenna for it? I could not pick up any thing until I hooked it up to my
out door old school TV antenna that works pretty good. Any suggestions?

50 feet of wire as high and clear as possible will be about as good as you
can get for what you are doing and cheap. The horizontal direction will
cause some directional effect. Better--two such wires at 90 degrees with
you switching to whichever one hears your station best.

If you want something better, particularly if you have interference from
electrical devices, highly recommended is

Grundig G5 'portable' AM/FM Shortwave Radio
http://www.universal-radio.com/catal...able/3005.html

CAUTION - Most 'portable' AM/FM Shortwave Radio tend to
"Overload" {Too Much RF Signal} when used with a 'classic'
Longwire Antenna that is more than 30~45 Feet long.

Look on eBay for a RadioShack Shortwave (SWL) Antenna Kit
and Buy one.
http://search.ebay.com/search/search... k+Antenna+Kit

Buy a 6"~8" piece of 1/2"~1" PVC Pipe.

Take the Insulated Wire {used as the Feed-in-Line} that comes
with the Shortwave (SWL) Antenna Kit :

Connect an Alligator Clip to the End of the Insulated Wire.

Leave a 8"~12" Loose-End of the Insulated Wire after the Alligator
Clip and then use Black Plastic Electrical Tape to secure the
Insulated Wire to the PVC Pipe.

Wrap a Coil of Insulated Wire around the Insulated PVC Pipe.
The Coils should be evenly 'spaced' about one wire diameter apart.

Tape_o_o_o_o_o_o_o_o_o_o_o_o_o_o_o_o_o__Tape
======================================
'=' PVC Pipe - 'o' = Insulated Wire - '_' Evenly Spaced
======================================
Tape__o_o_o_o_o_o_o_o_o_o_o_o_o_o_o_o_o_Tape

When you have covered the PVC Pipe with one layer of about
40 to 60 Turns {Wraps} of Evenly 'Spaced' Coils of Insulated
Wire : Secure the Insulated Wire to the PVC Pipe at the other
end of the PVC Pipe with with Black Plastic Electrical Tape.

You have now made a "Portable Wire Antenna" (PWA) that
was created and written about by Tom Sevart [N2UHC].
PWA = http://www.geocities.com/n2uhc/portablewire.html

READ - Using the "Portable Wire Antenna" (PWA) with your
'portable' AM/FM Shortwave Radio
http://groups.google.com/group/rec.r...89c8fd6fcb38f2
Tell you "How To" Use and 'Connect' the "Portable Wire Antenna"
(PWA) =TO= your 'portable' AM/FM Shortwave Radio several
different ways.

Place this Wire Covered piece of PVC Pipe where you normally
have/listen to your Grundig G5 Radio.

Run Route the remaining Insutlated Wire out a Window.

FOLLOW - The Instructions that come with the Shortwave (SWL)
Antenna Kit to make your simple Longwire {Random Wire Antenna.

MODIFIED - "Hook-Up" of the RadioShack Shortwave (SWL)
Antenna Kit : Instead of a 'classic' Longwire Wire : Make It a
Windom Antenna.

The Wire {Bare Copper} Antenna Element is 75 Foot long.

* Instead of 'connecting' the Insulated Wire {feed-in-line} at
one end of the Wire Antenna Element

* Connect the Insulated Wire {feed-in-line} at a point that is 28
Feet
from one end of the Wire Antenna Element. This gives you two
Antenna elements from the one piece of Antenna Wire :
The Shorter is 28 Feet -and- The Longer is 47 Feet

* Rig the Two Ends of the Wire Antenna Element using the Plastic
Insulators and Nylon/Poly Rope like you would the Longwire Antenna.

Double Modifying the RadioShack Shortwave (SWL) Antenna Kit
for use with 'portable' AM/FM Shortwave Radios

MOD # 1 - Feed-in-Line Wire at the Radio-End 'modified' to a
"Portable Wire Antenna" (PWA) Connection.

MOD # 2 - Wire Antenna Element 'modified' to a "Windom" Antenna
for Less Antenna Overload and Multi-Banding.

* Have a National Champaign to put a Shortwave Radio in
Every Home and in the Dashboard of Every Car & Truck.

* Shortwave Radio Awareness Month.

* Every new Radio made-in or imported-into the USA
would have to be AM&FM plus the Shortwave Bands.

* Federal Law to require that all Covenants, Conditions and
Restrictions (CC&Rs) "Allow" Outside Antennas for Radio
Listening.

* Require Cable TV and Satellite TV Broadcasters to have one
or more 24/7 Audio Channels carrying all major International
Shortwave Radio Broadcasts in English.

yeah that's a big fat chance -if- i ruled the radio world ~ RHF
