Default High speed data on unshielded media

Greetings:

There is a short thread in alt.internet.wireless regarding
QRN from data over unshielded media (HomePlug, HomePNA,
phoneline-nets, etc.)

See thread title: "Can I do this?"

SWLers should weigh in on this issue.

Properly designed systems, built with quality parts and built and
tested by skilled workers
are a very minor problem. But most real world systems are far from
properly designed, and
forget the quality parts and skilled assembly and testing.

Between BPL and the myriad of devices that either have logic controls
or switch mode power
supplies, SWLs, and hams, are fighting a lost battle.

I simply can't see my neighbors caring one bit if their shiny new
network, smart house controller,
or DSL cause me problems. After all they can't comprehend why anyone
would want to listen to
weak noisy signals.

I worked for a little over two months wrapping up, winding down, and
EMI certification lab.
Even if a device meets Class B regs, it can still be a RFI nightmare.
We only examined
"conducted emissions" which cover not only power line noise, but also
the noise into all
data/signal I/O cables.

High speed means high noise.

Good Luck
Terry
