The February issue of Popular Communications
"Telamon" wrote in message
... I was looking for Monitoring Times but apparently my local Barns & Nobles is to lame to carry it anymore. I did find an issue of Popular Communications though. Coincidentally, I was at their store in Palmdale looking for MT, didn't find it either, but bought Pop Comm for the first time in perhaps a couple years. (The bookstore is spelled "Barnes & Noble", by the way.) I'm thinking about getting back into shortwave after many years away from the hobby, so I was mainly interested in the listener loggings to see what's on nowadays. As a Southern Californian, I was struck by the dominance of reports from the east half of the country. Maybe it's a regional cultural thing, or maybe propagation favors the East. Every dozen years or so the urge hits me. Last time was the mid 90s, I think. A guy I worked with -- big time radio buff -- was buying a Drake R8, and tried to convince me to do the same. For reasons I can no longer remember, it never happened. But I've been reading the receiver reviews in the 2008 Passport to World Band Radio, so maybe this year. Like the OP, I couldn't get into that bizarre KLFF story in Pop Comm. I only read part of it. The straightforward radio history stories they used to run were more to my taste. At least there's some technical depth to the magazine, as in the propagation article. I suspect it mainly rehashes what's on the web, but there's more incentive to study something thoroughly if it's in a magazine I paid for! -- Paul Hirose To reply by email remove INVALID |
