Does Sony still make SW radios?

I want to buy a portable shortwave radio ... my beloved 20 year old
Sony ICF 2002 has finally died and I can't find anyone who will repair
it.
I'd like to get another Sony ... I really like the SW7600 GR but
can't find it for sale anywhere ...

Actually I can't find any Sony SW radios anywhere (I'm in
Canada) ... have Sony left the portable SW market entirely?

What would you folks recommend then ... for about $150?.
Is the Grundig G5 any good?
Many thanks.

You might try the yahoo sony 2010 group. there is a person
who post there that repairs them. worth a shot. great radio,
hate to see it go bad.

Maybe the speaker failed or the headphone jack contacts are corroded.
Try plugging in head phones and see if they work. If they do it might
fix the speaker problem.

In fact the headphone jack of my Sony 2001 (about the same age) just
recently fell all apart. To use the radio without headphones you have to
solder together a couple of contacts inside.

If the headphone jack hasn't fallen apart, cleaning it is a good idea. Put
a drop of isopropyl alcohol or contact cleaner on a headphone plug, plug it
in and take it out several times.

this sound problem happened all of a sudden. it's a mystery. i took it
to a sony dealer here and thye said something about a part being
corroded. i didnt junderstand, and they were the least interested in
dealing with it. sorry i cant be more specific about what the problem
might be.

Get a Q-tip, cut one end off, use the shaft to cycle your headphone jack
a few times.

I don't think Sony is technically making the 7600 any more. But I
think there is a lot of inventory out there. It's a good radio for
sure. But also look at comparable offerings from Kaito/Degen such as
the DE1103.

What are you talking about? We were telling him how to clean the earphone
jack on his radio -- not his ears.

If he never uses earphones, he may still need to clean the earphone jack
because it contains a switch to cut out the speaker, and if the switch
contacts get dirty, the speaker stops working.

the problem isn't that theres no sound coming from the speaker ... the
problem is that it is very very weak, no matter how loud the volume
thingie is turned up.

Right, just what you'd expect if those contacts are dirty, so that there is
a high resistance in series with the speaker.

so ... how would i clean those contact ... someone i think suggested
sticking a qtip into the hole where headphone jack goes ... shud the
qtip be dipped in alcohol or some other cleaning fluid?

If you have headphones, the first thing I would try is just plugging the
headphones in and unplugging them several times. If this helps, you're on
the right track and 1 drop of rubbing alcohol on the tip of the plug would
be the next move -- then plug it in and unplug it repeatedly. I don't think
a Q-tip stem would be particularly helpful since it wouldn't come in contact
with the contacts.

Next step would be to open up the radio and see if you can actually get to
the contacts.

If the headphone jack is the same as in the ICF-2010 (2001), then, sadly, it
is a unique item no longer available from Sony. With my ICF-2010, I worked
out a way to use a commercially available one, with circuit modifications.
Lacking an ICF-7600 service manual, I don't know what to advise, but the
problem is soluble.

That's assuming it is the headphone jack.
