childish behavior and the profanity used by a few of the contributors. But,
If you guys are serious about getting back to the purpose of the group, the
wonderful hobby of Shortwave Listening, count me in.

I've been away for a while due to a lack of time to read the
newsgroups, the result of various reasons. Now, I am starting to get
caught up and have returned to find that the noise level does seem to
have gone up in this NG since I last read it regularly, and I'm having
to tweak my killfile a bit to compensate.

Toward that end, may I make a constructive suggestion relative to
wading through the spam, might I suggest that you grab an NNTP client
rather than using Outlook for reading the newsgroups?

These allow you to filter out unwanted posters using a variety of
header fields. Now, many people create filters based on the From:
field and killfile the poster by his/her/its e-mail address. The
problem with that is that those addresses can be spoofed, and so
people trying that approach often experience less than optimal results
because spammers frequently change their posting addresses

I've found that if you filter on the subject line contents, you have
better results. Set up filters that trash anything that contains words
such as - Nike, Paypal, ebay, wholesale, rolex and other frequently
spammed brand names - in the subject line, and after a bit of tweaking
you can get a good NNTP client to remove most of this garbage for you
automatically, almost all of it in fact.

Simply killfiling an e-mail address works for those times when you've
decided that a regular poster who consistently posts from the same
address just doesn't post anything worth reading. Sadly, I've
killfiled a few individuals in some of the groups I'm subscribed to,
but filtering on the subject line proves much more effective for those
who want to peddle fake watches, sneakers, porn, or whatever.

Just my $0.02 worth and here's hoping it helps.

Yes...and in the case of this newsgroup, a filter to remove
rec.radio.info posting guidelines that don't belong here would also
seem to be in order. Unfortunately, filters set in the newsgroups
don't work on e-mail.

Therefore, this morning I received an e-mail reply from someone at
panix.com (from which the rri/rrapm moderation team carries out its
dirty work) concerning the FAQ for this newsgroup, and to which I
composed a reply to the effect that apparently nobody in this group is
interested in their group, its posting guidelines, or its moderation
team.

Somehow, I doubt that this will convince them to concern themselves
with their own groups and leave ours alone, but at least I tried.

And for those times when you're not, well, that's where the filtering
methods I mentioned in another thread come in. :-)

In my reply to their e-mail I made the point that it seems most of the
regulars here find their crossposted material inappropriate and that
they are seen as trying to insinuate themselves into the affairs of
another newsgroup despite not being wanted here, but as I said to RHF,
I don't know if it will do any good. For the record though, I did try.

I do want to get back to updating the newsgroup's FAQ docs though, and
would still like to hear from knowledgeable individuals interested in
contributing to that effort.

While I could care less about the r.r.i crew, I guess I at least owe
you guys here an explanation. I was away from the group here for a
little over a month.

Ironically, it was sort of because of radio interests that this
happened. Back in January, I ordered a SignaLink USB from
Tigertronics. It finally arrived on a Tuesday in mid-February, and the
same evening I set its internal jumpers for my Kenwood TS-450S/AT and
connected it to the rig and the computer that I had planned to use for
this purpose, a 333 MHz P2 MMX running Windows ME.

After I had it installed and working and had made a few contacts using
the program WinMx and some other software that came on a mini-CD
bundled with the SignaLink USB. at that point I decided that I also
wanted to try using it with Ham Radio Deluxe and the included (with
newer releases) Digital Master 780. The older version of HRD that I
had, which ran fine under Windows ME did not include DM780. A newer
version was required to get DM780, and Windows 2000 or newer is
necessary to run that new version.

I upgraded the OS on that machine to Windows 2000 on Wednesday, and it
ran so slowly as to be completely infuriating. If I had run DM780
alone it probably would have been fine, but I wanted HRD running with
it, and when i did that, the machine was so ridiculously dog-slow I
just couldn't stand it. My old 486 DX/4-100 with Windows 3.1 that I
had ten years ago was faster than that P2 333 MMX running Win2K.

Finding this totally unacceptable, on Thursday I ordered the parts
from Newegg to build a new machine. Intel dual core 2 GHz CPU, 4 GB of
dual-channel interleaved RAM, twin 600 GB SATA hard disks, nice full
tower case with individual removable drive bays (because SATA drives
are hot-swappable as long as you don't yank the one containing the
partition the OS resides on...the hardware doesn't care but the OS
gets very upset indeed!). Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, I was
not about to spend the $249 that Vista Home Edition was going for at
the time when I could get an OEM version of XP Pro x64 for $79.

Also around this time I ditched my old dialup internet access in favor
of DSL. So, after assembly of the new machine, I had to back up
everything on two computers, set up the OS and a ton of other software
on the new machine, upgrade the other machine (a Dell GX110 667 MHz
P3) from Windows ME to Win2K (not wanting to waste Win2K now that I
had it), get the LAN set up again using the NAT router instead of CAT5
between two NIC cards, get my DSL working, and restore what was backed
up to the Dell.

Firewall rules had to be set up in the NAT router. Software firewalls,
antivirus, etc. installed on both machines along with the applications
I wanted to be able to run on each. I was installing stuff at 3:00 in
the morning running on coffee and adrenaline. At one point, with seven
Firefox windows, two IE windows, an instance of Winamp, an MS Word
document, a PDF document in Adobe Acrobat, and four Notepad windows
open, I clicked Tile Windows Vertically instead of Show Desktop. You
haven't lived unless you have witnessed what a mess you get when you
do that.

By the time I finished all this, I was facing a column deadline and
numerous meetings and training classes related to public service
activities (as well as club meetings, and other, purely frivolous
activities that seemed to have been put on hold for weeks such as
eating and sleeping). I didn't even have time to handle my e-mail
(there are still 137 unread messages in my e-mail inbox as I type
this), let alone read/post messages to Usenet.

On top of which, Verizon tech support, when asked what the name of the
NNTP server was, told me that Verizon didn't support that. I had to
find out a week later at like 3:30 in the morning by accidentally
typing news.verizon.net into my client program instead of what I meant
to type in, and subsequently receiving an error message announcing a
protocol error rather than the error I should have gotten if
news.verizon.net didn't exist. Yes, "Verizon Tech Support" is an
oxymoron, like "military intelligence" or "Microsoft Works" or
anything along those lines. Thankfully I'm knowledgeable enough about
computers and networking that I don't have to depend on them, and knew
better than to install the Verizon software that came with the router
so that it could hijack my web browser to some stupid Verizon "start
page" - but anyway, I'm back.....no thanks to Verizon Tech Nonsupport.

The good news is, I can happily report that the SignaLink USB works
just fine with HRD/DM780 and HRD/DM780 run just fine under the 64-bit
version of XP. The bad news is, I now have a lot of catching up to do.
This is a fresh installation of my NNTP client on this machine and
this morning it downloaded 32000+ message headers in this newsgroup.

I'll post the current "Welcome To rec.radio.shortwave" document again
later tonight or early tomorrow. Same as the one posted by me
previously except that it will reflect my new e-mail address (the
result of the change in ISP due to getting DSL) and the rewording of
the copyright info that I promised back in January in response to RHF
mentioning something about how I worded the copyright info. This will
also be available at the web address given in the original document,
probably by the time you read this.

It seems to me he needs a daily reminder.

He started this crap thread but that was not enough. For some reason he
feels the need to pollute the news group with many more garbage posts.
He starts threads like this one and answers legitimate questions with
more crap. Because RHF interferes with on topic threads filling them
with crap responses he is far worse than any spammer selling shoes and
watches that can be easily kill filled. RHF pretty much can't be avoided
so be resigned to read his crap as I have but at the very least the
retard is going to have to read criticism from me.

Now if you have a better suggestion I would like you post it but if not
put a cork in it Mike.

Hey RHF, how is our news group retard doing this evening?

And just how do you become a better news group retard? This is a
legitimate question according to your subject line so I'm on topic
according to your line of retarded thinking.

What's wrong with the 1996 (?) statement?

It is in direct contradiction with the 1984 statement.

I don't believe r.r.s was newgrouped until 1993. But anyway......

The main issue I have with the old documents is that they haven't been
updated/posted regularly here since like 1998, and they're copyrighted
by Ralph Brandi - or by Scott Fybush, in the case of the AM/TV DX'ing
FAQ - guys who aren't around anymore.

Maybe we could repost the original documents here and get away with
it, but there have been a lot of new technologies and stuff that have
come out in the last ten years. There were never any documents on
satellite radio, for example (which incidentally is one document
somebody else is going to have to help out with because that's not at
all my cup of tea nor my area of expertise).
