Greetings RHF..
I'm really not surprised that others have thought of the Hula Hoop antenna long before now! I DO appreciate all the links to the groups. I got looking at the design and as I remember (as a kid) it seemed to be larger than 26" or so in diameter. In fact, I do notice that the good folks at WHAM-O amongst others offer various sizes of the hoop. Obviously they do, in fact, come in different sizes: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...SIN=B0018ND9KG http://www.wham-o.com/default.cfm?pa...3&Categor y=8 http://www.sports-hoop.com/main_adult180.html However, this would be a bit extreme!! http://thelongestlistofthelongeststu...argest138.html === === === === === Here's a great reference for those in the DIY mood! Now this relates a bit more to the forum. Now we're talking (or listening as the case may be).. http://www.hard-core-dx.com/nordicdx.../hulaloop.html (complete with a schematic & common parts..) However, in the end, it's your choice. I have used the Select-A-Tenna years ago and indeed it does work rather well relative to the built-in antenna in most portable AM radios. Since the Terk is using the same principal of design, I can't see why it wouldn't work equally as well for the MW band. If you snoop around a bit on the Web, you could probably find schematics and plans on how to build your own. The design is fairly simple. The convenience factors are not having to construct it yourself and that the molded plastic makes it easy to keep/store and move over the years. - I've even wondered if anyone has attempted such a - design with a Hula Hoop with a couple of holes drilled - at one end to run many turns of wire within. This - along with the simple capacitive tuning element should - provide some rather good results for the MW band. dBc, Edek Electronics "Torus-Tuner" Loop Antennas {Basically a Hula Hoop with Wires inside It.} http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/2857 Edek 26" Inductively Coupled AM/MW Loop Antenna http://www.radiointel.com/review-edek.htm Building as Torus Tuner {Equivalent} AM/MW Loop Antenna http://groups.google.com.jm/group/re...34348788936b04 READ - Build Your Own AM/MW Broadcast Band (BCB) "Hula Hoop" Loop Antenna http://groups.google.com.jm/group/re...fc1c535a7e8169 http://groups.google.com.jm/group/re...525fb13002c52d READ - Slinky Jr. on a Hula Hoop = A Loop Antenna plus the MFJ-1020C Active Antenna used as a Pre-Selector. http://groups.google.com.jm/group/re...fad0a7e37de992 READ - A Mini-Slinky (Metal Spring Thingee) on a Hula Hoop works for me. -aka- The Spiro-Helical {Slinky} Antenna . . . http://groups.google.com.jm/group/re...0dc53f94367b29 it's good to be in-the-loop - iane ~ RHF {pomkia} |
