The sound card makes decoding fax, rtty, etc. signals a lot easier. Let
software do the translation instead of buying a dedicated piece of
equipment for each type of signal. A sound card saves money.

about technical skills. Any mouth-breather can buy fancy radios and
string up a wire and hear a 100,000 (and up) Watts radio station from
the other side of the world; it takes a lot of skill and a lot of luck
to see someone typing on a keyboard in New Zealand working the Pacific
Northwest on 5 Watts. PSK31 is more efficient than CW.

it is basically listening to the radio.

a common-man's Hobby -cause- any mouth-breather
can do it and enjoy it : Without getting into becoming
