First, what would be the point of having 95% of the people on welfare?
What would that "goal" accomplish?

The economy is a mess and it is ripe for politician to express
government is the answer to all our troubles. With his expansion of
government and new entitlements, he will increase the dependent class.
It's given, government entitlements are hard for politicians to let
go.

Finally, even if this were so, how could the 5% that are working support
the 95% that aren't?

We are on a progressive road of having the ratio of tax receivers
coming close to *taxpayers. By the time the baby boom generation
retires, there will be less people paying into the system. We also
have the second highest corporate tax amongst industrialized nations.

The top 1 percent of income earners, by household, paid 39 percent of
all federal income taxes in 2005, whereas the bottom 50 percent paid a
little over 3 percent. Further, 32 percent of all tax returns filed in
2005 were from people who paid no federal income tax at all.

During Fiscal Year (FY) 2006, the IRS collected more than $2.2
trillion in tax net of refunds, about 44 percent of which was
attributable to the individual income tax. This is partially due to
the nature of the individual income tax category; containing taxes
collected from working class, small business, self employed, and
capital gains. Of the Individual Income Tax, the top 5% of income
earners pay 60% of this amount.

It stands to reason that 60% represents less people than those who pay
little or no tax at all.

The reason that the top 1% of income earners (and I use the term loosely)
pay 39% of the taxes, is that they glean more than 39% of the money. Actual
taxes paid per dollar *earned* tend to be higher for the middle class
because the middle class doesn't incorporate their wealth into tax shelter
land, so they end up paying a much higher percentage of their actual income
than the upper class...

That's why we need a flat tax. It's more fair.

You're right, and the http://Fairtax.org is a good solution. The best
thing is that it spreads the tax bill over a larger group so that when
that top 5% don't have income or some of them choose to Damper their
income for the next four years of Obama, they won't be able to shut down
the economy by drying up the tax receipts into the IRS.
