The top 1 percent of income earners, by household, paid 39 percent of all federal income taxes in 2005, whereas the bottom 50 percent paid a little over 3 percent. Further, 32 percent of all tax returns filed in 2005 were from people who paid no federal income tax at all. The reason that the top 1% of income earners (and I use the term loosely) pay 39% of the taxes, is that they glean more than 39% of the money. Actual taxes paid per dollar *earned* tend to be higher for the middle class because the middle class doesn't incorporate their wealth into tax shelter land, so they end up paying a much higher percentage of their actual income than the upper class... That's why we need a flat tax. It's more fair. You're right, and the http://Fairtax.org is a good solution. The best thing is that it spreads the tax bill over a larger group so that when that top 5% don't have income or some of them choose to Damper their income for the next four years of Obama, they won't be able to shut down the economy by drying up the tax receipts into the IRS. |
