That ''Weather'' is kind of unusual, doing some hairpin turns, it is
getting up a lot of energy.

Fifteen to twenty tornados have already been reported in Texas,
according to JT and Dave on their radio talk show.

couple blocks away from my aunt's house in St. Louis. They are NOT fun to
watch up that close.. : /

Back in the 1950's, an F5 tornado destroyed all, or most of down town
Vicksburg,Mississippi.

F5 tornados are the largest on record/recorded.
There have been some close calls (tornados) in my neighborhood before.
I have said it before and I say again,,,

Yeah, I was going to respond to Bruce till I saw what you said, you
said that right. I always kind of felt the same way as Bruce till the
mid 90's (I think.) It was maybe three in the morning and I was at a
twenty four hour store and I knew the weather was getting bad. I had
my handheld scanner on with the ear bud and could tell it was getting
realll bad. Me - like a dumbass jumped into my car with all the
antennas and played amateur tornado chaser. It was the dumbest thing I
ever did in my life and if I'd have been maybe a couple minutes
earlier I would have been toast. I learned a couple things that
morning and one of them is if you're going to go chasing trouble in
the sky, don't do it under the cloak of darkness. That nightime/early
morning storm killed I forget how many people and leveled parts of
neighborhoods and crossed the interstate and until just maybe a couple
years ago - you could still see where it took the tops of trees off or
uprooted them on both sides of the highway.

Before there were weather babes people would build their houses on the
north facing side of a hill, partially underground, and relatively safe
from most tornadoes.

I understand, Brenda - but...

I chased them in Texas 1982-1983. I was an atmo sci grad student at
Texas Tech. I was:

Hit by a small tornado, probably F0-F1
Hit by baseball-sized slushy hail
Hit by lightning

We saw many tornadoes, although when we were *that* close, we had
other things on our minds besides taking pictures. Nonetheless, I'd do
it all again, every day, if I could. It was the best thing I ever
did.

Bingo - storm chasing is not a nighttime activity, especially if the
storm is tornadic.

We get several each year in California, but in the general absence of
the big midwestern-style supercells, fed by Gulf moisture and
catalyzed by Great Plains lows and Texas drylines, that power the
mighty Plains whirlywinds, ours are usually pretty weak. An F1
tornado here is a big deal.

That is sooo cool Bruce, I see now that you had your bonkers about you
in doing that/ saying what you said. I shouldn't have done what I did
and won't do it again. ;-) The one that ripped through the Cincinnati
Blue Ash area was categorized as an F4 if my memory serves me right, I
could be wrong but I think that was it. I think I said this in my
earlier post about it, but if it had been day time - I wouldn't have
put myself in the bad spot I was in because I could have seen it but
because it was nighttime I couldn't see anything. That wasn't too
bright.

Ah man, I just looked at those - what a trip. I had bought at a Barnes
store some years back a "weather book." It is the size (longer in
length than in heighth) and makeup that you can keep it in your glove
box or actually keep it in your back pocket if you're standing up.
Light blue flexible soft cover and it shows the name of every cloud
and what area that specific cloud is seen at....and what type of
atmospheric conditions have to be present for that specific cloud and
on and on. Then it has a seperate section on storms /tornados/
hurricanes/lightning etc. etc. and every cloud and storm described is
accompanied by a killer color pic.

Just thought I would bring that up seeings how we're talking about the
subject.:-) My weather manual has definitely gotten used more than the
binder was made for and dollar for dollar - was one of the best
purchases I ever made. Now if I can only find it...lol...I misplaced
it a while back and haven't been able to find it. It isn't "lost" -
just misplaced. ;-)
