This quote by Karl Marx has been grossly twisted and misinterpreted over the years to be an argument against all religions. Remember that at that time (1820-50), opium was a legal substance in Europe. Mostly used as medicine. Not mainly as a narcotic recreational drug we associate the use of it today. So in this context, religion could be seen as a medicine for the masses and not escapism and life-lie. |
