California entities, including my own SCE, own 37% of the Palo Verde nuclear dynamo, near Buckeye. |

That's why it's primarily a solar observatory - the LP from LA has rendered it useless for dark sky astro. 18 miles can make a big difference...but it takes a REALLY dark sky for the Milky Way to throw shadows... As I recall from some hideous PBS in a hotel room, the 100" [?] was too tiny for anything else, according to the guy who built the 200" on Palomar. I'm way too busy to look it up. Well, that's funny - up here at Lick, the 120" still does amazing science. In fact, amateurs with scopes far smaller contribute immense knowledge every year. I think the interviewee was suffering from aperture envy. I want to rig up two poison ivy fences. One along side one side of my
back yard and the other one along side the other side of my back yard. What it is, that woman who lives next door to me has done put up a big above ground swimming pool and I don't want those other people who live next door, the other side of my house, to be taking short cuts across my back yard. Yeah, in fact of the business, some thorny briars will be good to include in the poison ivy fences too. cuhulin |

Threat to national security? Come on. Arizona is merely trying to enhance national security. Something that Boy Barry and his cadre of Liberal/Democrat/Marxist/Socialists seem to care little about. Everything about the power grid is federally controlled, and has been for as long as anyone can remember. If AZ were to cut of electricity to CA (or anywhere else), it would be a national security issue, as the grid supplies power to all state and federal infrastructure. It's not a matter of them being able to choose who they sell to, as a public carrier, they must sell to anyone able to pay. (For instance, they couldn't just come shut off your power because they don't like you.) The interstate sale is a bit different, but it's still a federally enforced contract. Also, such an action would set off a domino effect that would cripple the grid in many states. |

The technology still needs work to be truly cost effective and durable for normal consumer use and oh yes Bright Enough To Read By ! ~ RHF I admit I am not in one of the best places in the world for old technology. I recently purchased a used Drake SPR4. Being far too expensive (and too highly taxed) for a native to buy, it was bought by an immegrant from the US who thought he was going to listen to the news in English on shortwave. In 1976 or so when he bought it he proably was right, but the radio looked like by 1980 it had been placed on a shelf and ignored. I searched around for #47 bulbs for the dial lights. These are the small bayonet 6 volt bulbs that were in almost everything up until grain of wheat bulbs and LEDs became common. I found what was probably the only box in the country. I could have ordered them from the US, but the cheapest box I could find was over $25 after I included postage. Someone recommend a place called SuperBrightLeds.com on another mailing list I am on. They sell replacement bulbs with LEDs instead of filaments. These bulbs work on AC or DC, and can be used by themselves or in series. The best point for me was they put them in an envelope for $5 shipping. The drake uses 2 bulbs with a blue filter and one without. I replaced the bulbs that were filtered with blue LED bulbs and the unfiltered one with a white LED bulb. Quite a spiffy result. :-) Geoff. -- Geoffrey S.
