Check your SW[AM] Antenna Switch and the 500
Ohm and 50 Ohm Antenna Connections : Both have
to 'match-up' -or- Select "Whip" for the internal AM/MW
Ferrite Rod Antenna. and Naturally the front far-right
"Band" Switch has to be "AM" not "SW".
* AM/MW displays "AM" & KHz
* SW displays "AM" + "SW" + "Meter" & KHz
Note 1 - Make sure that the Attenuator [ATTN] Button
is not pressed 'On' [ATTN] displayed.
Note 2 - Make sure that the "Air Squelch" Knob
is Turn CW to "9".

- Does the 800 use two separate front ends for AM reception?

IIRC there is a Shortwave RF Pre-Tuner Section
and a separate AM/MW RF Pre-Turner Section

- I've seen different front ends used for AM and
- FM sections, but not for AM-BC and AM-SW.

There are Two 'separate' external Antenna Switches
on the back side of the Grundig Satellit 800-M

2 - FM/AIR : Whip & 75 Ohms

Note 1 - #1 SW[AM/MW] Switch in the "Whip" position
connects the internal 4" AM/MW Ferrite Rod Antenna
which is 'positioned' Front-to-Back on the left-side-top
above the Speaker in the GS800-M -where-as- most
Radios have the 'positioned' Side-to-Side [LR]

Note 3 - -don't-laugh- Place the GS800-M on a Lazy
Susan with the Loop Antenna on it Top just over the
Speaker. Rotate the Radio & Loop Antenna as one
unit Turn the Radio and Dial-in the Antenna to get
your best AM/MW Reception.
-reminder- the Radio has to have the Switch for the
SW [AM] External Antenna in the "Whip" Position
to use the built-in AM/MW Ferrite Rod Antenna
with an Top-Mounted AM/MW Loop Antenna.

SECOND :
There are Three 'separate' external Antenna Inputs
on the back side of the Grundig Satellit 800-M

Another AM/MW Small Loop Antenna to AM/MW
Ferrite Rod Antenna -trick-
Take 50 Feet of Speaker Wire with a Mono-1/8" Plug
on the Near-End to Plug-into the Loop Antenna's 1/8"
Mono-Jack. Run the Speaker Wire from the Radio
and out a Window of Hole-in-the-Wall; up the side
of the House up to the Eaves or Roof-Line. Tie a
Knot in the Speaker Wire to Mount it to an Insulator.
From the Far-End split the two Insulated Wires of
the Speaker Wire Apart forming two arms/legs.
Run these two Legs as a Dipole or a "V" Antenna
-or- Out-and-Around to form a Loop and strip and
reconnect the Wire Ends to complete the Loop
Antenna. Plug the 1/8" Mono-Plug into the 1/8"
Mono-Jack of the Loop Antenna. Use the Top
Mounted Loop Antenna as a AM/MW Antenna
Tuner for the External Speaker Wire Antenna.
