- - I tried the Grundig yesterday, after a long lack of use. - The AM reception on the Broadcast Band was horrible. - It was mid day, but the time station on 10MHz came in - loud and clear, WWV @ 10 MHz usually is good during the day-light hours. - just the Broadcast band didn't work. Check your SW[AM] Antenna Switch and the 500 Ohm and 50 Ohm Antenna Connections : Both have to 'match-up' -or- Select "Whip" for the internal AM/MW Ferrite Rod Antenna. and Naturally the front far-right "Band" Switch has to be "AM" not "SW". * AM/MW displays "AM" & KHz * SW displays "AM" + "SW" + "Meter" & KHz Note 1 - Make sure that the Attenuator [ATTN] Button is not pressed 'On' [ATTN] displayed. Note 2 - Make sure that the "Air Squelch" Knob is Turn CW to "9". - Does the 800 use two separate front ends for AM reception? IIRC there is a Shortwave RF Pre-Tuner Section and a separate AM/MW RF Pre-Turner Section - I've seen different front ends used for AM and - FM sections, but not for AM-BC and AM-SW. - Anyone with schematics? Check-Out the Grundig Satellit 800 Group on Yahoo for the RF & IF Block Diagram in the 'Photo' Section of the Group. -why-not- join-and-ask-them- http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Satellit800/ - mike First : There are Two 'separate' external Antenna Switches on the back side of the Grundig Satellit 800-M http://www.mwcircle.org/mw_rec_grundigsat800.htm 1 - SW [also AM] : Whip & 50 Ohms & 500 Ohms 2 - FM/AIR : Whip & 75 Ohms Note 1 - #1 SW[AM/MW] Switch in the "Whip" position connects the internal 4" AM/MW Ferrite Rod Antenna which is 'positioned' Front-to-Back on the left-side-top above the Speaker in the GS800-M -where-as- most Radios have the 'positioned' Side-to-Side [LR] http://www.radiointel.com/Radpic/sat800/image003.jpg Note 2 - Placing a small [12"] External AM/MW http://www.classic-audio.com/marantz/dpics/AMA.gif Loop Antenna on the GS800-M has the Loop {Hole} http://images.nevadaradio.co.uk/large/eton/an200-1.jpg F2B and the Loop [Ring] S2S to Couple to the Radio's http://cdn2.ioffer.com/img/item/126/612/061/eIyF.jpg Internal Ferrite Rod Antenna. http://img.youtube.com/vi/xdHafza7Ym8/0.jpg -reminder- the Radio has to have the Switch for the SW [AM] External Antenna in the "Whip" Position to use the built-in AM/MW Ferrite Rod Antenna with an Top-Mounted AM/MW Loop Antenna. Note 3 - -don't-laugh- Place the GS800-M on a Lazy Susan with the Loop Antenna on it Top just over the Speaker. Rotate the Radio & Loop Antenna as one unit Turn the Radio and Dial-in the Antenna to get your best AM/MW Reception. -reminder- the Radio has to have the Switch for the SW [AM] External Antenna in the "Whip" Position to use the built-in AM/MW Ferrite Rod Antenna with an Top-Mounted AM/MW Loop Antenna. SECOND : There are Three 'separate' external Antenna Inputs on the back side of the Grundig Satellit 800-M http://www.universal-radio.com/catal.../0800rear.html 1 - "F" Connector 75 Ohms for FM &AIR 2 - Twin Red & Black Push Terminals 500 Ohms for Shortwave [SW] and AM/MW 3 - SO-239 Connector 50 Ohms for SW & AM/MW Reminder - Make sure that you have both the Antenna Selection Switches and the Right Antennas 'connected' to get the best -if- any reception with the GS800-M. MORE INFO :Grundig Satellit 800-M Radio / Receiver http://www.radiointel.com/review-satellit800.htm http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/1699 MANUAL : Grundig Satellit 800-M "Manual" Download http://www.radiolabs.com/downloads/m...S800manual.pdf Another AM/MW Small Loop Antenna to AM/MW Ferrite Rod Antenna -trick- Take 50 Feet of Speaker Wire with a Mono-1/8" Plug on the Near-End to Plug-into the Loop Antenna's 1/8" Mono-Jack. Run the Speaker Wire from the Radio and out a Window of Hole-in-the-Wall; up the side of the House up to the Eaves or Roof-Line. Tie a Knot in the Speaker Wire to Mount it to an Insulator. From the Far-End split the two Insulated Wires of the Speaker Wire Apart forming two arms/legs. Run these two Legs as a Dipole or a "V" Antenna -or- Out-and-Around to form a Loop and strip and reconnect the Wire Ends to complete the Loop Antenna. Plug the 1/8" Mono-Plug into the 1/8" Mono-Jack of the Loop Antenna. Use the Top Mounted Loop Antenna as a AM/MW Antenna Tuner for the External Speaker Wire Antenna. -reminder- the Radio has to have the Switch for the SW [AM] External Antenna in the "Whip" Position to use the built-in AM/MW Ferrite Rod Antenna with an Top-Mounted AM/MW Loop Antenna. hope this helps - iane ~ RHF |
