At the low point in the trip, rice was traded for equal weight in gold. He only survived because he had a enough body fat to keep him going. Others simply died on the road. |

All the people with power require it, and, of course, all the economies of organized countries operate with money. Treasury notes (the cash in your pocket) is money, as are Treasury bonds and bills. To a lesser extent banker's acceptances and commercial paper are a form of money, too. The world has been operating very well on this basis since the 1940s. |
